Two-goal second period, power play doom Huskies in loss to Ohio State

ST. CLOUD—A two-goal second period proved to be too much for the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (3-7-1, 2-6-1-1 WCHA) to overcome Friday as the Huskies were shutout for the second-straight game in a 3-0 loss to Ohio State (6-6-1, 2-6-1).

With the defeat, the Huskies find themselves on a three-game losing skid.

Adversity arrived early for SCSU, as senior defender Caroline Markstrom was whistled for a check from behind and sent off for a game misconduct just over seven minutes into the game. Already playing with just five defensemen due to an injury to junior Brittney Anderson, the Huskies were forced to close out the remaining 52:41 with just four blue liners.

"That was certainly not the way you want the weekend to start," head coach Eric Rud said. "Though, I thought the four did a great job tonight. They hung in there and played just fine."

After playing a scoreless opening period, the Buckeyes struck twice in the second with goals from freshman forwards Crystal Sorem and Samantha Bouley, which was more than enough for redshirt sophomore goaltender Kassidy Sauve, who turned away all 20 shots she faced.

Though St. Cloud State was out-shot, 26-20, and was blanked for the second-straight game, Rud was encouraged by the caliber of opportunities his team created. Senior forward Lauren Hespenheide was the Huskies most dangerous player, leading the team with five shots on goal, including a pair that drifted just wide of the goal.

"If you look back at the quality chances in this game, we had more than they did," Rud said. "You just have to find the next step, whether that's finishing a rebound or taking an extra second to get a good shot off."

With the game still scoreless, SCSU had a pair of chances on the power play, but was unable to take advantage. The Huskies were 0-for-3 with the man advantage for the game and have been held in check on their last 12 opportunities overall.

"There are plays to be made within what we are doing (on the power play)," Rud said. "We're passing when we should shoot and shooting when we should pass."

"It's just not clicking so we will keep working on it."

St. Cloud State and Ohio State close out their two-game set tomorrow, Saturday, November 12, at 1:07 p.m. at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Bring your skates!
