Freshman Janna Haeg, sophomore Ivy Dynek score their first career goals in the loss
BEMIDJI—A pair of career firsts were not enough for the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (4-8-1, 3-7-1-1 WCHA) on Friday, as Bemidji State (5-7-1, 3-7-1-0) snatched the Huskies early lead and pulled away to hand SCSU a 6-2 setback.
Freshman forward Janna Haeg and sophomore forward Ivy Dynek each notched their first goals in a Husky uniform in the loss.
Haeg opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the game, finding the puck in the crease and poking it home, to give the Huskies a short-lived lead.
The Beavers quickly erased SCSU's early advantage, roaring back to tie the game 54 seconds later and scoring twice more in the ensuing 6:41 to seize a 3-1 lead after the first 20 minutes. Bemidji State pulled away with two more goals in the second and another in the third to hand St. Cloud State a four-goal defeat.
The six goals equaled the most the Huskies have allowed in a game this season. BSU also racked up a convincing 57-16 edge in shots on goal, which is the most the Huskies have allowed in a game this year.
"We did not compete hard enough and did not play sharp enough in any level of the game," head coach Eric Rud said. "You have to park this one, but you cannot forget about it. You have to remember the feeling of what happens when you don't show up ready to go."
"They played like a team that was behind us in the standings and was hungry to try to catch up to us," he added. "We did not show up with that same level of intensity."
After the Beavers had built a four-goal cushion, 5-1, Dynek pounced on a turnover just over three minutes into the final period to briefly cut the deficit to three. Four different Huskies registered a point in the game and, despite the loss, Rud was encouraged that his team is continuing to find new sources of offense.
"We're constantly looking for different ways to create offense," Rud said. "When it goes in for a couple people who haven't been on the score sheet, it's a step in the right direction."
Freshman Janine Alder got the start in goal and turned away 35 shots—her fifth 30-plus save outing this season—before being pulled after the second period. Senior Madeleine Dahl replaced her and made 16 saves.
"(Alder) played outstanding for two periods and if we weren't going to play harder for her then there was no sense in keeping her in there," Rud said. "Maddie has played well in practice the last couple of weeks and deserved a chance to get in there."
St. Cloud State will seek to get back on track when it closes out its two-game set in Bemidji against the Beavers on Saturday, November 19 at 3:07 p.m.
