SCSU men's hockey on the road to Western Michigan

The #17 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (6-6-0, 2-4-0 NCHC) will continue its 2016-17 season on Nov. Dec. 2-3 with a two-game series at the Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. against #13/16 Western Michigan (7-3-2, 3-3-0 NCHC). On Dec. 2, the Huskies and Broncos will square off at 6:00 p.m. (CT) and on Dec. 3, SCSU and WMU will complete the series with a 6:00 p.m. (CT) game.

TEDDY BEAR TOSS: Fans should mark Dec. 10 on their calendars for the annual Teddy Bear Toss at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. SCSU will host Omaha that night and fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used Teddy Bear or stuffed animal toy to throw onto the ice during the first intermission. All Teddy Bears and stuffed animals collected during the Toss will then be donated to the local Toys for Tots campaign in St. Cloud, which helps the area's needy during the holiday season.
EVEN UP: SCSU enters the weekend series against WMU with 41 goals scored this season and the Huskies have also allowed 41 goals on defense in 2016-17.
GOAL LEADER: Judd Peterson paces the Huskies this season with seven goals and 10 points. In his career, Peterson is the Huskies' active goal scoring leader with 27 goals in 87 career games played.
ASSIST LEADERS: Rookie defender Jack Ahcan and sophomore forward Patrick Newell are also tied for the team's point lead with 10 points apiece (2g/8a). Both Newell and Ahcan lead the Huskies this year with eight assists apiece.
AGAINST THE BRONCOS: In the all-time series against Western Michigan, the Huskies and coach Bob Motzko own a 9-3-2 record. SCSU has won the last six consecutive games against the Broncos and the Huskies are 5-0-1 in games played against WMU in Kalamazoo, Mich... SCSU outscored the Broncos 39-13 in the six games played in the series last year. In the games played in Kalamazoo during the 2015-16 season, SCSU scored a 5-2 win on Nov. 13, 2015 and an 11-1 win on Nov. 14, 2015...In the first round of the NCHC playoffs in 2015-16, the Huskies scored a 4-3 (OT) and 4-2 series sweep against WMU at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on March 11-12, 2016.
LONG TIME: On Nov. 18-19, the Huskies suffered back-to-back shutouts by scores of 4-0 and 3-0 against North Dakota. This marked the first time during SCSU's Division I era (since 1987-88) that the Huskies were shutout during a weekend series and it was the first time since a 4-0 loss at UMD on Feb. 27, 1993 and a 1-0 loss at Minnesota on March 5, 1993 that the Huskies have suffered consecutive shutouts... Prior to the shutouts against UND, the last time that the Huskies had suffered a shutout was a 4-0 setback on March 30, 2014 against Minnesota in the NCAA Division I West Regional championship game.
TEDDY BEAR TOSS: The Huskies' annual Teddy Bear Toss is slated to take place on Saturday, Dec. 10 during the first intermission of the Huskies' game against Omaha. Fans are asked to bring a new or gently used Teddy Bear or stuffed animal toy to bring to the game that night and throw them onto to ice during the first intermission Teddy Bear Toss. All items collected that night will be donated to the St. Cloud area Toys for Tots drive that helps the area's needy during the holiday season.
NEWS AND NOTES FROM SCSU: Zach Driscoll owns a 3.22 goals against average and a 5-4-0 record for the Huskies in the nets this season. He leads the club with 190 saves this season...Blake Winiecki has played in 59 consecutive games for the Huskies...the Huskies have played eight games this season against top 20 ranked teams this season. WMU is also ranked among the nation's top 20 teams this week...Jimmy Schuldt leads the Huskies this season on the plus/minus at +7...Mikey Eysssimont leads the Huskies this season with 49 shots on goal. As a team, SCSU has outshot its opponents 387-337.
NORTH STAR CUP: SCSU will participate in the 2017 North Star Cup on Jan. 27-28. SCSU was the 2016 North Star Cup champion. The Huskies open tournament play in 2017 on Jan. 27 with a match against Bemidji State. Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth will play the second game on Jan. 27. The championship game and consolation game will take place on Jan. 28. All games will be played at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul, Minn.
