ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State University senior wide receiver Jameson Parsons has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Division II football team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced this afternoon.
Â
An Eagan, Minn. native and biomedical sciences major with an emphasis in pursing a career in orthopedic sports medicine, Parsons owns a cumulative grade-point average of 3.69. He has been a three-time NSIC All-Academic Team selection and was SCSU's recipient of the 2015-16 NSIC Butch Raymond Scholarship, a scholarship for NSIC athletes that plan on pursuing a career in a health related field or attend graduate school in a health related field. Additionally, last season Parsons earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and a place on the program's Academic All-American Second Team.
Â
Parsons, in only second year of playing the wide receiver position, recently became just the second SCSU receiver in school history to top 1,000 yards receiving in back-to-back season with his 1,051 yards this year after 1,272 yards a junior. His 1,000-yard seasons are only the sixth and seventh the school has had one from a wide receiver. He leads the team and ranks among the top 10 in the conference in 2016 in receiving touchdowns (6th – 7), receiving yards (3rd – 1,051), receiving yards per game ((3rd – 116.8), all-purpose yards (7th – 117.56) and receptions per game (2nd – 7.1). He also ranks among the top 50 nationally in receiving touchdowns (49th), receiving yards (6th), receiving yards per game (10th) and receptions per game (12th). His 1,051 yards receiving is already the fifth-most in school history, while his 64 catches rank sixth for a single season.
Â
Parsons has either scored a touchdown or gotten a 100-yards receiving in eight of the nine games this season including four games with over 120 yards receiving. He set a new career-high and ended up with the ninth-best single game receiving day in school history with his 181 against Sioux Falls (9/1). Parsons set a new career best with his 10 catches and two touchdown receptions against Upper Iowa (9/10).
Parsons is also quickly moving up the career receiving record book at SCSU despite only having played a total of 20 games at the position. He is sixth in receiving yards (2,323), eighth in receiving touchdowns (16), catches (125) and receptions per game (4.03 – but would be second if only games as receiver counted – 6.25) and ninth in yards per catch 18.58).
Â
Overall, Parsons is the 17th different St. Cloud State football player to be named to a CoSIDA Academic All-District team since 2000 and his being named is the 26th time it has occurred in the same time frame.
Â
Parsons is one of 12 NSIC football players named to the team this year. He and the rest of the all-district selections will now be eligible for the Academic All-America team, which will be announced on Nov. 30.
Â
To be eligible for academic honors from CoSIDA, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average, and be a starter or a key reserve on his team.
Â
CoSIDA members vote on the all-district teams; then a national panel selects the Academic All-America squads from all first-team all-district choices.
Â
This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
The Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2016-17 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.
