Offensively the Huskies were led by Dwayne Lawhorn (Sr., QB, Gerwantown, Wis.) who was 15-of-29 for 150 yards passing, along with one passing touchdown. Paris Howell (So., RB, Brookfield, Wis.) was the leading rusher with four rushes for 38 yards on the day. Curtrawn Evans (Sr., RB, Bloomingdale, Ill.) and Joe Blando (So., RB, Oak Creek, Wis.) both had seven touches for 28-yards and 32-yards. Anthony Carver (Sr., TE, Milwaukee, Wis.) had three receptions for 52-yards. Alec Hafferman (So., DB, Edgar, Wis.) led the team with eight total tackles.
For the Warriors, Owen Burke threw for 223-yards and two touchdowns on 16-of-24 passing. Santiago-Lloyd rushed for 108-yards and tallied one touchdown. Sawyer Maly and Jake Balliu both had receiving touchdowns.
The Warriors put together a strong opening drive that saw their offense take the ball 92-yards on 11 plays for a touchdown. SCSU responded by moving the ball downfield and getting into field goal range. Instead of kicking a field goal the Huskies went into their bag of tricks, John Solberg (Sr., WR, Cambridge, Minn.) connected with Graham Miller (Sr., LB, Minneapolis, Minn.) on the fake field goal for a 10-yard reception to extend the drive. Lawhorn later found Blando from 11-yards out for the first Huskies score of the day.
The Warriors scored on their next drive with a one-yard rush but the Huskies did not counter with any points and ultimately punted their next drive. After the St. Cloud State defense forced Winona State to punt, the Huskies drove the ball down the field and came away with a 33-yard field goal from Adam Stage (Jr., K, Appleton, Wis.) to make the score 14-10, in favor of the Warriors.
St. Cloud State's defense make a few big stops to force another Winona punt. The Huskies offense took the field with just over two minutes left before half to try and score. On third and two, Lawhorn had a tipped pass intercepted. Winona capitalized on the turnover and quickly scored on a 13-yard rush to make the game 21-10 with just over a minute left. During that drive the Huskies struggled to move the ball and Lawhorn ended up throwing an interception with 38 seconds left in the half. The Winona kicker just missed a 48-yard field goal to keep the score at 21-10.
St. Cloud State was backed up in their end-zone for a punt and Winona was able to get through the line to block the punt and recover the ball in the end-zone to make the score 28-10. A few drives later the Winona quarterback found a Warrior receiver for a 58-yard touchdown to make the score 35-10.
The Huskies would not go down quietly and continued to show fight late in the game. Early in the fourth quarter, St. Cloud State put together a solid drive that featured nice runs from Evans and big catches from Anthony Carver. The Huskies gambled and decided to go for it on fourth and one but Lawhorn's pass was incomplete. The next drive, Justin Chzech (Jr., QB, Chippewa Falls, Wis.) along with a few other players checked in and they were able to put together a 70-yard eight play scoring drive. To cap the drive off Xavier Mullins (So., WR, West Allis, Wis.) found the end-zone for the first time this season on a rush for a seven-yard touchdown to make the score 38-17.
St. Cloud State will look to rebound and get back on track next week as they trek to Bemidji State University to resume division play. The Huskies will be looking to finish the season strong. The Huskies will be back at home in Husky Stadium November, 9 at 1 p.m.
