Huskies Defense Pitches A Shutout and Offense Runs Wild

St. Cloud, Minn. – The Huskies hosted Minnesota Crookston for their first home game of the year. Husky Stadium was packed with the NSIC's best fans who have been anxiously waiting for Huskies football and St Cloud State University did not disappoint with the show they put on. The Huskies handedly beat the Golden Eagles by a score of 38-0. SCSU proved to be too much for Minnesota Crookston as they extend their all-time win streak to 16-0-0.
St. Cloud State University improves to 2-0 (2-0 NSIC North) on the young season and Minnesota Crookston falls to 0-2 (0-2 NSIC North) on the year.
The Huskies defense proved just how talented and disciplined they really are by pitching a shutout. St. Cloud State University held the Golden Eagles to just 11 first downs and only gave up 114 total yards of offense. SCSU added seven sacks, one forced fumble, and four pass break-ups. The St. Cloud State University defense also held Minnesota Crookston to 1-of-13 on third down conversions and did not allow the Golden Eagles into the red zone. This is the first shutout since 2016 when the Huskies shutout Minot State University 31-0.
The offense got off to a slow start tonight after only taking a 10-0 lead into halftime but they scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter to put the game away. The offense had 399 yards of total offense on the night while continuing to establish their strong rushing attack. The Huskies were 8-of-17 on third down conversions and 1-of-1 on fourth down conversions. SCSU was also 5-of-6 in in the red zone on the night.
Late in the first quarter Dwayne Lawhorn (Sr., QB, Germantown, Wis.) capped off a five play 41-yard drive with a quarterback keeper to break the 0-0 tie. A 31-yard catch and run from Tanner Teige (Jr., WR, Big Lake, Minn.) helped get the Huskies inside the red zone.
To open up the second quarter with Minnesota Crookston driving the ball Wyatt Jentz (So., DL, Horton, Wis.) made a big time hit that led to a fumbled recovered by Louis Williams Jr., DB, Elk Grove, Ill.). While the SCSU drive ultimately stalled despite good field position Adam Stage (Sr., K, Appleton, Wis.) converted a 30-yard field goal.
After receiving the ball after halftime, St. Cloud State University wasted no time driving the ball 65-yards down the field in 11 plays. A few plays that highlighted the drive were a Lawhorn 11-yard rush, a Joe Blando (So., RB, Oak Creek, Wis.) 14-yard rush, and a 20 yard catch by Teige which put the Huskies on the two-yard line. Blando punched the ball in for his first touchdown of the season to make the score 17-0.
The very next drive the Huskies went 59 yards on five plays to extend their lead to 24-0. A 45-yard bomb from Lawhorn to John Solberg (Sr., WR, Cambridge, Minn.) set up a two-yard touchdown run by Curtwan Evans(Sr., RB, Bloomingdale, Ill.).
Paris Howell (So., RB, Brookfield, Wis.) scored his first rushing touchdown of the season from four yards out after a turnover on downs by Minnesota Crookston.
On the last scoring drive of the night Howell took over as he rushed for over 20-yards on three plays. Lawhorn scored on a 15-yard rushing touchdown which proved to be the nail in the coffin.
Next weekend St. Cloud State University will face a nationally ranked Minnesota Duluth team which will be one of the toughest match-ups all year. Minnesota Duluth is currently 2-0 (2-0 NSIC North). Be sure to catch the game next Saturday., September 21, 2019, 6 p.m. at Minnesota Duluth.
