Gutschow earns Second Team Academic All-America Honors

AUSTIN, TEXAS – St. Cloud State University football senior Ben Gutschow (Amherst, Wis. / Amherst) will need to make more room in his trophy case. Two weeks after earning First Team Academic All-District honors), the senior defensive back was named Second Team Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Tuesday morning.
Gutschow is the first Husky to be named Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA since 2016 when Jameson Parson last earned the honor in 2016. A senior from Amherst, Wisconsin, Gutschow has maintained an impressive grade point average (GPA) while serving as one of St. Cloud State's top defensive backs in 2019. In 11 games, Gutschow racked up 45 total tackles, with 32 solo and 13 assists, 1.5 tackles for loss and .5 sacks. Additionally, he's pulled in two interceptions this season, returned one for a touchdown, recorded 10 pass breakups and one quarterback hurry.
Gutschow did not just receive the award for his athletic accomplishments. Off the field, the senior has maintained an impressive 3.91 GPA while majoring in bio-medical studies and has earned Academic All-Conference honors three in his career. As a junior, Gutschow received the prestigious Butch Raymond Scholarship from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and was named to the conference's Academic Team of Excellence this past fall.
The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America football team is selected by members of CoSIDA and recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their efforts both on the field and in the classroom. After earning First Team All-District honors in November, Gutschow became an automatic finalist for Academic All-America honors, which recognizes a select number of student-athlete across all three NCAA Divisions plus the NAIA. He is the first Husky in the St. Cloud State athletic department to earn Academic All-America honors this season.
