#3 St. Cloud State drops 4-1 decision against Minnesota Duluth

The #3 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (25-7-1, 15-5-1 NCHC) lost a 4-1 decision against Minnesota Duluth (12-14-5, 8-10-3 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 26 before 4,861 fans at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies fell behind early in the contest as Minnesota Duluth charted a goal at :39 of the first period by Adam Johnson. He was assisted on the goal by Dominic Toninato and Alex Iafallo. The Bulldogs then stretched their lead to 2-0 with a marker by Brenden Kotyk at 16:26 of the first with assists from Tony Cameranesi and Karson Kuhlman.
UMD finished the first period with an unassisted power play goal by Kuhlman at 18:07 to make it 3-0.
The Huskies broke the shutout in the second period with an even-strength goal by Mikey Eyssimont with assists from Ethan Prow and Kalle Kossila. This was Eyssimont's ninth goal of the 2015-16 season. He also hit a season game-high with 12 shots on target during the contest. The assist was Prow's 24th of the year and it was Kossila's team leading 28th helper of the year.
The Bulldogs capped the night late with an empty net goal by Kuhlman at 19:54 of the third period. Alex Iafallo had the lone assist on the play for UMD.
SCSU had 50 shots on goal in the game, which marks the Huskies' second highest shot total in a game this season. UMD had 35 shots in the contest as Charlie Lindgren made 31 saves in the game for SCSU. Kasimir Kaskisuo was the goalie of record for UMD with 49 saves on the night.
On the power play, UMD was 1-3 and SCSU was 0-2.
These two teams will complete their NCHC series with a 7:07 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. HUSKIES HEADLINES:
- SCSU Hobey Baker Award candidate Ethan Prow charted his 24th assist of the season on Feb. 26. He now has 18 goals, 74 assists and 92 points in his career with the Huskies. He now ranks second in the SCSU records for most points by a defenseman. He moves ahead of Andrew Prochno, who had 91 points from 2011-15.
- Kalle Kossila now has 46 goals, 93 assists and 139 points with the Huskies over four seasons of play. He ranks ninth in the team scoring charts and is one point behind Ryan Malone, who had 140 points from 1999-03.
- Mikey Eyssimont has 23 points to his credit this winter and he is the Huskies' top scoring freshman in 2015-16.
- The 4-1 loss equals SCSU's lowest goal total this season in a game. The Huskies also had one goal in a 4-1 loss at Quinnipiac on Oct. 24 and a 1-1 tie at UMD on Jan. 16 this season.
- SCSU's 50 shots on goal is the team's second highest shot total of 2015-16. The Huskies' highest shot total of the season was 51 against Arizona State on Jan. 2. Of note, SCSU is 13-4-0 when they outshoot their opponents this season and 10-3-1 when outshot by its opponent.
- SCSU has now lost three consecutive games at home against UMD. Last year, SCSU lost 3-2 OT and 3-1 against UMD. SCSU's last home win over UMD was a 4-3 decision on Feb. 15, 2014. In the all-time series against UMD, the Huskies own a 62-44-9 lead and they are 2-2-1 in the last five games played in the series.
