SCSU baseball opens 2016 season with victory over St. Mary's (Tex.)

The Huskies opened the contest with three runs in the first inning and pushed their lead to 7-2 with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Â The offense continued to produce with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning, which pushed SCSU's lead to 10-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, St. Mary's rallied with two runs before both squads charted two runs apiece in the sixth inning to make it 12-6. Â SCSU padded its lead to 14-6 in the top of the seventh with another pair of runs before St. Mary's charged back with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final tally 14-10.
Logan Spitzack and Tyler Gentz combined for two key innings of relief pitching to blank St. Mary's in the final two innings of the contest.
SCSU starter Reese Gregory was the pitcher of record for the Huskies with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Â He allowed seven hits and gave up four runs.
At the plate, SCSU leadoff hitter Brandon Arnold was impressive with four hits, three runs and three RBIs. Â He had a home run and a double in the game for SCSU. Â Zach Hoffmann had four RBIs in the game and three hits and Karl Sorensen had two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. Zak Hoffman, Kyle Lieser and Jackson Goplen also had two apiece in the winning effort for the Huskies.
The Huskies will continue ther 2016 season on Feb. 6 with a 6 p.m. game against Tarleton at the Houston Winter Classic.
