#3 St. Cloud State men's hockey drops Miami, 5-1

The #3 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (23-5-1, 13-3-1 NCHC) stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games with a big 5-1 victory at Miami University (10-3-3, 5-10-2 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 5 in Oxford, Ohio.
The victory helped the Huskies move back into a two-way tie for first place in the NCHC standings with 41 points. North Dakota, which was idle this weekend, also has 41 points and a 13-2-1 NCHC record this season.
The Huskies and Redhawks will complete their two-game series in Oxford on Saturday, Feb. 6 with a 6:05 p.m. (CT) game at the Goggins Ice Center. Fans can listen to the game on 99.9 MORE FM (www.999morefm.com) and they can watch on NCHC.tv/scsu
In the first period, the Huskies and goalie Charlie Lindgren withstood being outshot 17-6 by Miami. In the closing minute of play in the period, SCSU's Ethan Prow broke the ice with an even-strength goal at 19:21 of the first period. He was assisted on the play by David Morley and Patirck Newell. The goal was Prow's sixth of the season and it was Morley's 22nd assist of the year and Newell's 12th helper of the year.
To open the second period, the Redhawks tied the game at 1-1 with a marker by Josh Melnick at :15. Alex Gacek and Grant Hutton gained assists on the play. The Huskies regained the lead at 11:35 of the second period with a goal nifty breakaway goal by David Morley that made it 2-1. A outlet pass by Nathan Widman found Morley alone on the breakaway against Miami netminder Jay Williams. The second assist on the goal was added by Joey Benik.
To complete the second period scoring, Judd Peterson netted his 13th goal of the year at 14:07 of the period. Will Borgen provided the solo assist on the goal by Peterson that made it 3-1.
In the third period, the Huskies turned up the heat with a goal by Blake Winiecki at 6:10 of the third with assists from Ryan Papa and Jimmy Murray. The goal pushed SCSU's lead to 4-1 and it was Winiecki's ninth goal of 2015-16. The assist was Papa's first of the season and it was also Murray's 19th assist this winter.
To conclude the scoring, SCSU's Patrick Russell netted the game's fifth goal at 15:53 of the third period. He was set up on the play by linemates Kalle Kossila and Mikey Eyssimont. This was Russell's 14th goal of the year and it was Kossila's team leading 25th assist of the year.
On the night, MU outshot the Huskies 36-24. On the power play, SCSU was 0-2 and Miami was 0-3. In the nets, Charlie Lindgren was stellar and earned the game's number one star with 35 saves to earn his nation's best 22nd win of the year. Jay Williams made 19 saves in the loss for MU.
