The Bemidji State Beavers steal game two from the St. Cloud State Huskies
2/6/2016 6:08:00 PM | Women's Hockey
St. Cloud, Minn. --- The Bemidji State Beavers (18-9-3, 13-9-2 WCHA) take home the win after a dominate performance by the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (11-14-4, 7-13-4 WCHA) on Feb. 6 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
The Huskies came into the first with a fire lit looking for revenge on the Beavers. They dominated the first half of the period, testing Bemidji's defense and making them work, but it was BSU who found the back of the net first after sending a shot over the shoulder of St. Cloud's Katie Fitzgerald. They continued to bring the heat and were robbed by the iron seconds after BSU's goal, when Kelsey Saelens fired one on net. The Huskies were given their first power play opportunity at the 13:28 mark Bemidji's penalty kill stayed strong and held off the dogs.
St. Cloud rallied during the intermission and once again came and controlled. They were awarded for their offensive efforts when junior defensemen, Alex Makaric, received a drop-pass on the side boards and carried it down around the net. She threw it in front where freshman Suvi Ollikainen was there to get her stick on it and create traffic. It was junior forward, Kelsey Saelens who was there to finish the play and tie the game 1-1 just 2:31 into the period. BSU didn't sit back and scored two more goals in the second period to go into the third with a 3-1 advantage.
Although the momentum was in Bemidji's favor, the Huskies continued to battle in search of their second goal to close BSU's lead. With just over halfway to play in the third, Bemidji's Melissa Hunt was sent to the box for a tripping penalty. St. Cloud's power play worked the puck in the offensive zone and were given a two man advantage when Ivana Bilic joined Hunt in the box after throwing SCSU's Molly Illikainen into the boards at the 11:45 mark. The Huskies peppered the Beavers with shots but were unable to steal a goal before both penalties expired. With 8:05 left in the game, the Beavers scored their final goal to solidify their 4-1 win.
The Huskies hit the road to take on the Fighting Hawks in their last away series of the 2015-16 conference season on Feb. 12-13. Friday's game will be played at 7:07 PM and Saturday's at 3:07 PM.
