Heather Miller-Koch, a former St. Cloud State University women's track and field and women's basketball athlete, has qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Â Miller-Koch earned her ticket to the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a second place finish in the heptathlon at the 2016 United State Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. on July 9-10. Â The top three finishers in the event earned a spot on Team USA for the upcoming Olympic games.
A former All-American and NCAA DII national champion in track and field during her time at SCSU, Miller-Koch charted a score of 6423 to claim second place in the heptatlon at the Olympic Trials.  Miller-Koch currently competes for the Central Park Track and Field Club.  Barbara Nwaba of the ABEO / Santa Barbara TC won the event with a score of 6494.  The third qualifying spot went to Kendell Williams of Georgia with a score of 6402. Â
Miller-Koch capped the event with a first place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.97.  She opened the two-day event with a fourth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles at 13.39 and placed fourth in the high jump at 1.81 meters and fourth in the shot put at 14.13 meters.  Miller-Koch also placed fifth in the 200 meters at 24.20 and then placed second in the long jump at 6.32 meters.  In the sixth event, Miller-Koch placed 11th in the javelin throw at 41.02 meters.
She becomes the 13th former SCSU student to earn a spot in the Olympics.  Other former SCSU students to compete in the Olympics over the years include: Ann Govednik Van Steinburg  (1932 and 1936 Summer Games in swimming), Matt Cullen (2006 Winter Games in hockey), Bret Hedican 1992 and 2006 Winter Games in hockey), Mark Parrish (2006 Winter Games in hockey), Van Nelson (1968 Summer Games in men's track and field), Jim Hazewinkel (1968 and 1972 Summer Games in Wrestling), Dave Hazewinkel (1968 and 1972 Summer Games in Wrestling), Ryan Malone (2010 Winter Games in hockey), Andreas Nodl (2014 Winter Games in hockey for Team Austria), Bruce Thompson (1976 Summer Games in Wrestling), Tami Jameson (1992 Summer Games in Team Handball), Toni Jameson (1992 Summer Games in Team Handball).
