Volleyball Falls to Upper Iowa in Four Sets

Fayette, Iowa – The St. Cloud State volleyball team (12-8, 4-6 NSIC) fell on the road to Upper Iowa (16-3, 7-3 NSIC) at Dorman Gymnasium on Friday night, Oct. 13. The team lost by scores 25-19, 25-21 and 25-18 and won the second set 25-19.
Senior Becca Gruber led the team with her 13 kills. Sophomore Marah Mulso totaled nine kills and two blocks. Freshman Erin Navartil recorded eight kills, a .273 hitting percentage plus two service aces. Junior Krista Kuglin picked up eight kills. Senior Kayla Crane led the team with her 24 assists. Freshman Maddy Torve has 16 assists plus 13 digs. Sophomore Clara Krenz recorded 33 digs. Senior Nicole Miller had 15 digs. Freshman Taylor Olstad totaled 10 digs. The Huskies ended up with 45 kills, a .096 hitting percentage, 42 assists, three service aces, 96 digs and three blocks in the contest.
Upper Iowa put three players in double figures with Anna Winter recording 12 kills with a .220 hitting percentage. Haley Poula totaled 12 kills while hitting .323. Haley Weepie picked up 11 kills. Bethany Lovhaug had a .246 hitting percentage on her eight kills. Malissa LeClair had 41 assists and 15 digs. Galby Holmes had 20 digs. Ashley Larson recorded 18 digs. Madie Meier totaled 14 digs. UIU had 51 kills, a .217 hitting percentage, 48 assists, three service aces, 96 digs and seven blocks in the four-game match.
The Huskies lost the first set by 25-14, but won the second set of the evening by a 25-19 score. The set was tied at 18 all until Gruber's kill gave the team for a good, 19-18, and put the team on a 7-1 rally. Gruber totaled four kills in that stretch with Navratil picking up a pair of point enders.
SCSU fell in the third set by a 25-21 with Mulso leading the team with her four kills. The Huskies rallied in the set and had a 19-18 lead only to see the Peacocks close things out on a 7-2 rally.
The Huskies fell behind 7-2 early, but got to within two, 15-13, in the fourth set before the Peacocks put together a 10-5 run to win the set and the match. Gruber led the team in the set with four kills.
