The #6/9St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (0-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) will kick-off the 2017-18 regular season on Saturday, Oct. 7 with a 7:07 p.m. game at #15/18 Minnesota State, Mankato. The game will be played in Mankato, Minn. at the Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato, Minn.

SKATE WITH THE HUSKIES: The always popular Skate with the Huskies has been set for Sunday, Oct. 22 from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Fans will have the opportunity to skate on the ice at the HBNHC along with members of the SCSU men's and women's hockey teams. Players will be available for photos and autographs. IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #6 ranking in the 2017-18 USA TODAY/USA Hockey Division I preseason poll. SCSU also gained a #9 ranking in the USCHO.com preseason poll for 2017-18. St. Cloud State was picked as the #2 team in the 2017-18 preseason NCHC poll. Of note, the Huskies received votes in the final USCHO.com poll of 2016-17. MSU is ranked #15 in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey poll and #18 in the USCHO.com poll.
NEXT HOME GAMES: The Huskies return to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Oct. 13-14 for a pair of home games against the University of Alaska. The weekend is Celebrate! SCSU and a wide variety of fun-filled activities will take place on campus that weekend. In addition to men's hockey being home, the SCSU football team will host MSU Moorhead on Oct. 14, the soccer team is home on Oct. 14 (vs. Sioux Falls) and Oct. 15 (vs. SMSU) and the women's hockey team is home on Oct. 13-14 against the Minnesota Whitecaps. RETURN TRIP: SCSU head coach Bob Motzko was selected once again to serve as the head coach for Team USA at the upcoming IIHF World Junior Championships in 2018 (in Buffalo). Motzko and Team USA won the IIHF World Championship in 2017. He was joined on that team by SCSU's Matt Chapman (video coach) and Jack Ahcan (defenseman).

THE LEADERS: Mikey Eyssimont led SCSU last season with 14 goals, three game winners, six power play goals and 30 points. In two years with the Huskies, Eyssimont has 63 points, 28 goals and 35 assists. He is a draft pick of the LA Kings. SCSU's top assist man last season was Patrick Newell with 20 helpers to his credit. In two years with the Huskies, Huskies has 35 career assists and 46 career points. Of note, Eyssimont also paced SCSU with 132 shots on goal. Judd Peterson ranked 2nd on the team with 99 SOGs last season.
COUGAR TALES: For the second consecutive season, the Huskies opened their year with an exhibition win over the University of Regina. On Sept. 30 at the HBNHC, SCSU charted an 8-0 win over Regina. Rookie Blake Lizotte made a quick statement by scoring a hat trick in the contest and he was joined in the offensive charge by fellow freshman Easton Brodzinski, who had one goal and two assists on the night. Jack Poehling tallied the GWG at 4:23 of the first and also ended the night with 1g/2a to his credit. Other multi-point Huskies in the game included Blake Winiecki (2a), Jimmy Schuldt (2a), Nick Poehling (2a), Patrick Newell (1g/1a) and Robby Jackson (1g/1a). The goalie trio of Jeff Smith, David Hrenak and David Zevnik combined for 25 saves in the contest, as the Huskies outshot the Cougars 53-25 on the night. SCSU is now 3-0 in the all-time series against Regina.
FIRST ROUNDER: Ryan Poehling became the second player in SCSU hockey history to be selected in the first round of the NHL draft in 2017. Poehling was selected as the 25th overall pick by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round. He joins Dennis Cholowski as the other Husky picked in the first round. Cholowski was a first round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 2016. Cholowski played one season at SCSU in 2016-17 before opting to sign a pro contract with Detroit in the spring of 2017.
HUSKIES vs. MAVERICKS:- The Huskies will kick-off their regular season against downstate rival Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday, Oct. 7. The game in Mankato is slated to start at 7:07 p.m. The two teams will complete this series on Jan. 20 with the Hockey Day Minnesota game at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn...Last year, the Huskies lost a pair of games at Minnesota State, Mankato by scores of 4-1 and 6-4 on Oct. 14-15, 2016...At the DI level, SCSU owns a 29-17-7 record against the Mavericks. SCSU is 5-4-1 in the last 10 outings against MSU, Mankato. The all-time series started back in 1969-70, with the Mavicks owning a 45-29-6 series lead prior to the dawn of the Division I era at SCSU in 1987-88.
PLENTY COMING BACK: The outlook looks bright for the Huskies! SCSU's top 12 point producers in 2016-17 will return for the 2017-18 season. This includes 30-point scorer Mikey Eyssimont along with these members of SCSU's 20-point club in 2016-17 - Blake Winiecki (25), Patrick Newell (24), Jacob Benson (21), Robby Jackson (21) and Jack Ahcan (21). Of SCSU's 105 goals scored in 2016-17, only five of those goals were scored by players who will not be returning in 2017-18.
BATTLE AGAINST BREAST CANCER: SCSU will be wearing pink jerseys on Oct. 14 in order to raise awareness for the good work being down by Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Central Minnesota. The game-worn pink jerseys will then be auctioned off during an in-game silent auction in the HBNHC concourse. Fans will have the chance to make bids on player jerseys with the players presenting their jersey to high bidders after the game. All proceeds from the auction will go to help Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Central Minnesota.
TEAM NOTES: Jack Ahcan led SCSU's freshmen with 21 points and 16 assists. Ryan Poehling led SCSU's rookies with seven goals...Soph Jeff Smith paced SCSU's netminders in 2016-17 with a 2.77 GAA and a .906 save rate. He played in 28 games with a 10-13-0 record and was the goalie of record in the final 14 games of the season...SCSU tallied 27 PPGs last season, while allowing only 20 PPGs in 2016-17...SCSU outshot it's opponents 1105-1059 in 2016-17...the Huskies were 8-13-1 in games played against top 20 ranked teams this season. SCSU played 61.1% of its games against top 20 nationally ranked teams this season. SCSU faced the fifth toughest scheduled in the nation last season, according to the DI Ratings Percentage Index.
