50th minute goal seals Huskies second straight setback
BISMARCK, N.D.—A goal just after the halftime break undid the St. Cloud State soccer team (5-6-0, 3-5-0 NSIC) on Friday as it dropped its second straight NSIC match, 1-0, at Mary.
With the loss, the Huskies have now been shutout in back-to-back contests and six times this season, overall. SCSU also dropped into a tie for 10th place in the conference at nine points with seven games to play.
SCSU's backline, led by senior defender Mackenzie Winters and junior defender Maria Witte, played tough and did not allow the Maurauders a shot on target until the 50th minute. It took a fantastic individual effort for Mary to break through, as it scored on its first shot on goal 49:55 into the game.
The 1-0 hole proved to be too deep for the Huskies to overcome, despite forcing six saves from the Marauders' goalkeeper—including four in the opening half. Junior forward Maria Kass led the SCSU attack with two shots on goal, while sophomore midfielder Brooke Bares chipped in a team-high three shot attempts.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Christian made two saves in the Huskies' setback.
St. Cloud State wraps up its weekend with a home match against Minot State on Sunday, October 8. Kick off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Soccer fans can reserve their seat ahead of time at scsutickets.com. Tickets will also be available on game day at the Husky Stadium box office.
