St. Cloud State strikes early, but succumbs to four unanswered Beavers' goals
ST. CLOUD—A sixth minute goal gave the St. Cloud State soccer team (5-7-0, 3-6-0 NSIC) a dream start, but it did not hold up against a four-goal Minot State (7-4-1, 6-3-0) rally as the Huskies endured their third-straight defeat, 4-1, on Sunday.
The setback dropped SCSU into a tie for 12th place in the NSIC at nine points with six league games to play.
SCSU's heavy pressure put the Beavers on their heels early, creating three shots and two shots on goal inside the match's first six minutes. The offensive push paid off 5:57 into the contest as freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Dziubinski curled in a shot from 20 yards out—her first career goal and points—to stake the Huskies to a quick 1-0 lead and snap their two-game scoreless drought.
The lead did not last long, though, as Minot State came back with goals in the 14th and 20th minutes to take a one-goal lead, 2-1, into halftime.
After an evenly-contested opening half, the Beavers took over during the final 45 minutes to extinguish SCSU's comeback hopes. Minot State out-shot the Huskies, 11-3, in the second stanza, including a commanding 8-1 lead in shots on goal, and capitalized of a pair of set pieces to double their lead. The Beavers scored from a corner kick in the 52nd minute and a free kick from just outside the penalty area in the 74th minute to increase their advantage to 4-1.
Minot State finished the match with a 16-8 edge in shots and landed 13 shots on goal to SCSU's three.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Christian stood tall against the Beavers' attack, though, making a season-high nine saves in the loss.
St. Cloud State is back at Husky Stadium next weekend for a pair of crucial NSIC matches. The Huskies will host Sioux Falls on Saturday, October 15 at 10 a.m., and Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday, October 15 at 2 p.m. Soccer fans can purchase tickets to both games online at scsutickets.com. Tickets will also be available on game day at the Husky Stadium box office. SCSU students with a valid university ID receive free admission to all soccer home matches.
