#1 St. Cloud State men's hockey drops 4-2 decision at #3 Denver

The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (7-1-0, 2-1-0 NCHC) suffered its first loss of the 2017-18 season with a 4-2 setback at the #3 University of Denver (5-2-2, 1-2-0 NCHC) on Friday, Nov. 10 in Denver, Colo.
In evenly match showdown between two of the nation's top college hockey teams, Denver gained a 1-0 advantage in the first period with an even strength goal at 12:31 by Henrik Borgstrom. He was assisted on the play by Troy Terry and Dylan Gambrell.
The Huskies rallied in the second period with a goal by senior blueliner Mike Ilvonen at 5:06. He was assisted on the play by Patrick Newell and Robby Jackson. This was the first collegiate goal for Ilvonen at SCSU.
The Pioneers grabbed a 2-1 lead when Jarid Lukosevicius scored at 9:35 with a solo assist from Gambrel. Lukosevicius then added the game winner at :40 of the third with a power play marker that was assisted by Ian Mitchell and Borgrstorm.
With goalie Jeff Smith out of the net for the extra attacker in the closing minutes of play, the Huskies narrowed the gap to 3-2 with a power play goal by Blake Winiecki. This was his second tally of the year and his second consecutive game with a goal. He tipped in a shot by Jimmy Schuldt from the blueline with the second assist going to Jackson. This was Schuldt's team leading eighth assist and 13th point of the year and it was Jackson's seventh assist of 2017-18.
DU iced the game at 19:28 with an empty net goal by Borgstrom that made the final tally 4-2.
In the game, SCSU outshot the Pioneers 34-29 as Smith had 25 saves for the Huskies. Tanner Jaillet won the game for Denver with 32 saves. Of note, SCSU was 1-6 on the advantage and DU was 1-2.
