SCSU men's hockey suffers 5-1 setback at DU on Nov. 11

The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (7-2-0, 2-2-0 NCHC) dropped a 5-1 decision at the #3 University of Denver (6-2-2, 2-2-0 NCHC) on Saturday, Nov. 11 in Denver. Colo.
The Huskies and Pioneers battled to a 0-0 tie through the first period before DU's Adam Plant broke the shutout with his power play goal at 1:32 of the second to make it 1-0.
Denver added another quick goal at 2:00 of the second with a marker by Tyson McLellan, which proved to be the game winning goal in the contest. Plant charted his second power play goal of the evening at 9:35 of the second to extend the Pioneer's lead to 3-0.
The Huskies broke the shutout at 11:14 of the second period with assists from Robby Jackson and Blake Winiecki. This was Fitzgerald's third goal of the season and it was Jackson eighth assist of the year, which places him first on the team's assist board this year along with Jimmy Schuldt. Of note, Winiecki added his second assist of the season on the goal and it extended his point scoring streak to three games.
Denver completed the sweep with a pair of third period goals to make the final 5-1. Dylan Gambrell scored at 2:43 of the third on the power play and Jarid Lukosevicius scored at 14:02 of the third to wrap it up for DU.
On the night, Denver outshot the Huskies 42-23. David Hrenak was the goalie of record for SCSU with 37 saves and Tanner Jaillet gained the win for DU with 21 saves.
A penalty filled game, SCSU had 12 penalties for 38 minutes in the game while Denver had nine penalties for 18 minutes. DU was 3-of-8 on the power play and SCSU was 0-of-5.
The Huskies will return to action next week with home games back at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Nov. 17-18.
