SCSU celebrates another goal on Nov. 17 against CC.

#2 St. Cloud State rolls to 6-1 victory over Colorado College

The #2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (8-2-0, 3-2-0 NCHC) returned to the win column in a big way with a convincing 6-1 victory over Colorado College (7-6-0, 3-4-0 NCHC) on Friday, Nov. 17 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, MInn.
SCSUÂ charged to a quick 3-0 lead in the first period to set the game's tempo, which saw the Huskies outshoot CC 22-5 in the second period and 46-22 in the game overall.
The offense was jump started in the first period with a goal by Easton Brodzinski at 6:45 with assists from Ryan Poehling and JImmy Schuldt. This was Brodzinski's second goal of the year and it gave SCSU a 1-0 lead.
At 13:42 of the first, Will Borgen scored the game winner with his first goal of the season. Assists on the even-strength goal were added by Blake Lizotte and Jacob Benson. The Huskies then made it 3-0 just 19 seconds later with a goal by Patrick Newell at 14:01 of the first. Judd Peterson and Jon Lizotte both had assists on the play for the Huskies. This was Peterson's seventh assist of the year and it was Newell's first goal of the 2017-18 campaign.
The Huskies extended their margin to 4-0 at 14:16 of the second period with a goal by Blake Winiecki. Borgen and Schuldt tallied assists on the play. This marked the fourth consecutive game that Winiecki has scored a point and it was his third goal in the last four games for SCSU. The assist was Schuldt's team leading 10th of the season and it was also his team leading 15th point of the year. He leads all DI blueliners this year with 1.50 points per game.
In the third period, Robby Jackson kept his nine-game point scoring streak alive with a goal at :48 to open the period. Brodzinski earned his first collegiate assist with the first helper on the play, while Ryan Poehling scored his ninth assist of the year on the goal.
CC broke the shutout with a power play goal by Westin Michaud at 3:37 of the third period. Nick Halloran and Mason Bergh added assists on the play for SCSU.
To cap the evening's offense, Blake Lizotte notched his first collegiate goal at 12:01 of the first period. Mikey Eyssimont and Benson each had assists on the play that made the final score 6-1.
On the night, SCSU outshot the Tigers 46-22. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-3 and CC was 1-of-4. Jeff Smith was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 21 saves to his credit and only one power play goal allowed. Alex Leclerc played for 14:01 minutes and made seven saves with three goals allowed. Alec Calvaruso finished the game in the nets for CC with 33 saves and three goals allowed.
The two NCHC squads will complete the weekend series on Saturday, Nov. 18 with a 7:07 p.m. start at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Tickets for the game are available at www.scsutickets.com or you can purchase them at the gate on game night.
