Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller Over Sioux Falls

St. Cloud, Minn. – Senior Becca Gruber tied her career high with 16 kills to lead the St. Cloud State volleyball team (16-11, 8-9 NSIC) to a five-set victory over Sioux Falls (14-9, 8-9 NSIC) on Friday evening, Nov. 3, at Halenbeck Hall. The set scores were 25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 15-25 and 15-12.
Gruber's 16 kills equaled the number of kills she had earlier this season against Bemidji State (9/14). She also hit .394 for the match. Redshirt freshman Abby Templin totaled 11 kills. Sophomore Marah Mulso picked up nine kills plus four digs and seven block assists. Freshman Erin Navratil totaled nine kills, a .226 hitting percentage plus three block assists. Senior Kayla Crane recorded 30 assists plus four service aces. Sophomore Clara Krenz had a match-high 25 digs plus two service aces. Freshman Maddy Torve picked up 19 assists and four digs. Freshman Taylor Olstad had 14 digs. Senior Nicole Miller tallied nine digs. SCSU had 55 kills, .171 hitting percentage, seven service aces, 71 digs and 10 blocks.
The Cougars were led by 14 kills from Averey Yaksich. She also hit .293 with 14 digs. Abby Feyereisen had 11 kills plus three block assists. Krista Goerger totaled 47 assists and four service aces. Bria Barfnecht had 20 digs plus eight kills. Lexi Scott totaled four service aces and seven kills. USF had 62 kills, . 215 hitting percentage, 61 assists, 11 service aces and eight blocks.
The Huskies won the first set 25-22 with Templin having five kills.
USF took the second set 25-22. Gruber had three kills in the set for SCSU.
The Huskies won the third set 25-18 with Gruber leading the way with her four kills.
The Cougars won the fourth set by a 25-15 score. Gruber totaled four more kills in the set.
The fifth set saw SCSU race out to a 10-5 lead only to see USF go on a 6-3 run to close to 13-11. The Huskies stood strong though with Templin and Mulso coming up with a big block assist to get the team up to 14-11. The Cougars kept fighting and made it a two-point margin on Feyereisen's kill. Templin finished off the set and the match with a kill to put the final margin at 15-12. Â Junior Micah Nier and Gruber both had two kills in the set
The SCSU volleyball team completes the 2017 home season with a 2 p.m. contest against No. 2 nationally ranked Southwest Minnesota State at Halenbeck Hall on Nov. 4.
