Men’s Basketball Survives 96-91 Overtime Thriller Over Minot State

Minot, N.D. – Redshirt sophomore Gage Davis just missed out on a triple double in leading the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (18-11, 14-6 NSIC) to a thrilling 96-91 overtime victory over Minot State (12-14, 8-12 NSIC) at the Minot State Dome on Saturday evening, Feb. 11.
Davis put up 34 points on 13-for-21 shooting from the field including a mark of 5-for-7 from three-point range. He also picked up a career-high 11 assists in the contest. Davis just missed out on pulling off the rare feat of a triple double as he pulled down nine rebounds. He also had both a block and a steal. It was his second straight night scoring at least 30 points and the third time this season that he has hit the mark. It was Davis' 12th double-double of the season and 22nd of his career.
Junior Jon Averkamp scored more than 20 points for the second straight night with 23 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field plus he had four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior Scottie Stone recorded 20 points including going 6-for-6 from the free throw stripe in his 41 minutes on the floor. Junior Andy Foley had a steady night of nine points, nine rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Brindley Theisen put up eight points off the bench.
Minot State had five players reach double figures led by Nathan Mertens 22 points and seven assists. Luis Ricci Maia contributed 18 points. Tyler Randolph picked up 17 points. Nathaniel Moore totaled 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
The Huskies shot 53 percent from the field (35-for-66), 47.8 percent from three-point range (11-for-23) and 88.2 percent from the free throw line (15-for-17). Minot also had a strong shooting day at 50 percent from the field (33-for-66), 37.5 percent from three-point range (9-for-24) and 80 percent from the line (16-for-20). The game featured eight tied scores and 12 lead changes. Minot State had a 17-point lead halfway through the first half, 30-13, that SCSU had to fight back from. It was the largest deficit that the Huskies had to fight back from in a victory this season.
SCSU trailed 36 to 28 at the half, but stormed back to outscored Minot State 51-43 in the second half and 17-12 in overtime. The overtime game was the first for the program since the 2013-14 season against MSU Moorhead (1/25/14). It was the first overtime win for the team since that same season also against Minot State (1/18/14).
In a back-and-forth second half, the Huskies were nursing a three-point lead with 22 seconds remaining after Davis knocked down a field goal. Minot State's Trevor Rothstein then hit a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining in the game to tie the game up and send the teams to the extra period.
In a hard fought overtime session that had featured five lead changes and three ties, Davis knocked down a three with just 35 seconds remaining to put SCSU up three, 92-89. Minot State then missed a layup and a three-pointer before Stone secured a rebound and was fouled. Stone stepped to the line and hit his free throw attempts plus a pair of technical foul shots to put the Huskies up 96-89 with just nine seconds remaining. Luis Ricci Maia was fouled just before time expired and hit his two free throws to make the final score 96-91 SCSU.
The Huskies return home next weekend to complete the 2017 regular season with contests against the top two teams in the North Division. The team plays against MSU Moorhead on Friday evening, Feb. 17, at 8 p.m. The program will then welcome in Northern State on Saturday evening, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. The game against Northern State will also be Senior Day for SCSU's Scottie Stone, Mark Hall, Nebojsa Stanojevic and Seth Mortag.
