St. Cloud State soccer opens 2017 season with 3-0 win

The St. Cloud State University soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NSIC) opened its 2017 season with a solid 3-0 victory over Northern Michigan University (0-1-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC) on Friday, Sept. 1 at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies dominated the contest with three first half goals that sealed the deal and provided senior goalkeeper Leah Schmidt with her first career shutout. Â Schmidt chalked up two saves in the game, as the Huskies outshot the Wildcats 10-6.
On offense, SCSU's Hannah Marion tallied the game winning goal at 20:48 with an as assist by Kylie Cleary. Â A cross by Cleary from the left side found Marion in front of the goal for the quick conversion. This was Marion's fourth career goal at SCSU. Â Kass' goal came on a rebound off the cross bar, which she then headed into the net.
The Huskies extended their first half lead with a goal by Maria Kass at 31:04. The unassisted goal was Kass' 18th career marker with the Huskies.  The offensive attack for SCSU was completed at 40:46 with a goal by Sarah Benhart on an assist from Maria Witte.  Benhart's third career goal was set up by Witte's free kick that found Benhart open in the box.
Schmidt played all 90:00 in the contest for the Huskies, while Ermma Vermette and Brianna Frontuto combined for four saves for NMU.
The Huskies will return to the pitch at Husky Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 3 with a Noon start against non-conference rival Michigan Tech University. Â Tickets for the contest are available at the gate and all SCSUÂ students get into the game for FREE.
