Huskies attack held scoreless for fourth-straight match in third-straight NSIC loss.
ST. CLOUD—An early goal against proved to be fatal for the St. Cloud State soccer team (2-4-0, 0-3-0 NSIC) as it dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 15 Minnesota State (4-1-0, 2-0-0) and suffered its third-straight setback to start its conference campaign on Sunday.
The defeat is the Huskies' third-straight 1-0 loss, fourth in a row overall, and fourth-straight in which they have been held off of the scoreboard. The shutout streak is the program's longest since SCSU was also held in check in four straight games during the 2011 season.
The nationally ranked and reigning NSIC Tournament champion Mavericks came out firing, creating a pair of threatening opportunities inside the game's first two minutes. That early pressure paid off in the ninth minute when a low MSU cross deflected off of sprawling Huskies sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Christian and onto the eager foot of a Maverick attacker, who cashed in and put SCSU into a 1-0 hole it was unable to climb out of.
Minnesota State kept the pressure on Christian and the Huskies back line throughout, out-shooting SCSU, 18-7, generating five corners to St. Cloud State's one, and forcing Christian into four saves—tying the Wyoming, Mich., native's career high.
Though the Huskies' attack was, for the most part, stymied on the afternoon, junior forward Maria Kass had her dangerous moments. The Pewaukee, Wis., native led SCSU with three shots and produced her team's two best opportunities of the match—a 50th minute shot that fluttered just wide of the left post and a 79th minute chance that was turned away by the MSU goalkeeper—one of two Huskies shots on goal.
St. Cloud State returns to action for a pair of league matches next weekend. SCSU will travels to Northern State on Friday, September 22 for a 4 p.m. kick off before returning to Husky Stadium to host MSU-Moorhead on Sunday, September 24 at 1 p.m. Tickets for Huskies soccer home games are available on game day at the stadium box office or can be purchased ahead of time at scsutickets.com. SCSU students with a valid university ID receive free admission to all home matches.
