Volleyball Falls to No. 6 Minnesota Duluth In Three Sets

Duluth, Minn. – The St. Cloud State volleyball team (9-3, 2-1 NSIC) lost a 3-0 match to No. 6 Minnesota Duluth (10-1, 3-0 NSIC) on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Romano Gym. The set scores were 25-10, 25-9 and 25-19. The loss snaps SCSU three-match winning streak.
Senior Nicole Miller led the team with her seven kills. She also picked up six digs. Fellow senior Becca Gruber totaled four kills. Sophomore Clara Krenz recorded 21 digs. Senior Kayla Crane tied for the team lead with her 10 assists. Freshman Maddy Torve also tallied 10 helpers. For the match, SCSU recorded 22 kills, 47 digs, 22 assists and one service ace.
UMD had three players in double figures in kills led by Kate Berg's 17 kills. Makenzie Morgen and Sarah Kelly both had 12 kills. The Bulldogs hit .339 as team for the match with 49 kills plus 48 assists, two service aces, 62 digs and nine blocks.
After dropping the first two sets, SCSU fought hard in the third set and had an 11-8 advantage before seeing the ranked Bulldogs go on a 6-0 rally to take the 14-11 lead. A kill from Gruber closed the gap to 18-16, but UMD finished the set and match on a 7-3 run to earn the victory. Gruber led the team with her four kills on only nine attempts in the third set. Miller put up three kills and three digs in the last set for the Huskies.
The St. Cloud State volleyball team returns home this weekend to host No. 12 Augustana on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. and No. 18 Wayne State on Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall.
