St. Cloud, Minn. – After showing fight and resolve for much of the season, the St. Cloud State volleyball team (10-4, 3-2 NSIC) came up with arguably the biggest win in the three-years of head coach Chad Braegelmann time with the program with a 3-0 sweep of No. 18 Wayne State (7-6, 2-3 NSIC) on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Halenbeck Hall. The win over a ranked team was the first in the tenure of Coach Braegelmann at St. Cloud State. Almost as impressive as the victory over the ranked opponent was the dominate fashion in which the Huskies did so in sweeping the Wildcats by scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-23.
The program was led by sophomore Marah Mulso's 11 kills. She hit at an incredible .444 for the match while also picked up four block assists and a pair of digs. Senior Nicole Miller tallied 10 kills while hitting .250 with nine digs and a service ace. Redshirt freshman Abby Templin totaled nine kills while hitting .400 with a pair of digs and three block assists. Senior Becca Gruber recorded eight kills plus three digs. Junior Micah Nier picked up seven kills while hitting .462 with four digs. Senior Kayla Crane led the team with her 23 assists and eight digs. Freshman Maddy Torve totaled 17 assists, five digs and a service ace. Sophomore Clara Krenz had a match-high 17 digs. As the team, SCSU had 50 kills, hit. 284 with 47 assists, four service aces, 55 digs and five blocks.
Wayne State had 25 kills, hit. .075 with 24 assists, 44 digs and four blocks. The Wildcats were led by seven kills from Erin Gross.
The first set saw the Huskies go on a 19-4 run to take full control of the set in the eventual 25-12 victory. Mulso had four kills in the opening set.
SCSU kept playing well in the second set and raced out to a 13-4 advantage. The Wildcats were able to make it a seven-point deficit, 17-10, before a Nier kill gave SCSU momentum back. The Huskies were able to outlast WSC in the 25-16 win. Miller led the squad with her four kills in the set.
The third set was a more tightly contested set with the largest lead only getting to four either way. SCSU did take that four-point lead on the kill from Mulso, 22-18. The Wildcats kept coming and eventual tied the game at 23 on a kill from Alyssa Ballenger. SCSU dug deep and got a kill from Nier and service ace from Torve to close out the set and the match by a 25-23 margin.
The St. Cloud State volleyball team will attempt to keep momentum going and takes on the top ranked team nationally next weekend on the road with a match against Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minn. on Friday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m.
