#2 St. Cloud State rallies to gain 4-3 victory over #12 Western Michigan

A goal at 15:32 of the third period by rookie forward Easton Brodzinski provided the #2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (14-4-3, 8-3-1 NCHC) with a 4-3 victory over #12 Western Michigan (12-9-1, 7-5-0 NCHC) before 4,224 fans on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory improved SCSU's record at the HBNHC this season to 11-1-1 and prevented the Broncos from capturing a weekend sweep in St. Cloud. SCSU will continue its 2017-18 season on Saturday, Jan. 20 with a 5 p.m. game at the HBNHC against non-conference rival Minnesota State Mankato. The game will be part of the Hockey Day Minnesota festivities, which is taking place in St. Cloud on Jan. 13.
Western Michigan opened the game on Jan. 13 with a power play marker by Dawson DiPietro at 19:53 of the first. SCSU then tied the contest at 1-1 with a goal by Blake Lizotte at 8:32 of the second period. Jon Lizotte and Mikey Eyssimont had assists on the play, which was Lizotte's third goal of the season.
WMU returned to the scoring column at 14:22 of the second with a shorthanded goal by Paul Stoykewych that made it 2-1. The Huskies issued a quick reply at 17:47 of the second period with a goal by Ryan Poehling. Assists on the goal were added by Jack Poehling and Will Borgen. This was Ryan Poehling's sixth goal of the season for the Huskies.
Eyssimont pushed SCSU's lead to 3-2 with a power play goal at 5:50 of the third period. Robby Jackson had the lone assist on the play, which was Eyssimont's ninth goal of the season and it was Jackson's 14th assist of the year.
The Broncos knotted the game at 3-3 at 11:14 of the third period with a power play goal by Corey Schuneman. The Huskies broke the deadlock minutes later with the game winner by Brodzinski. Eyssimont and Blake Lizotte each coined assists on the play, which was Brodzinski's eighth goal of the year.
Eyssimont now leads the Huskies in scoring this season with 25 points. He is also tied for the team's goal scoring lead at nine this season with Jackson.
In the game, SCSU outshot the Broncos 40-16. David Hrenak started the game in the nets for SCSU and played 45:26 minutes before he was ran into by a WMU player. He left the ice due to the collision and was replaced by Jeff Smith, who was the goalie of record with four saves in the final 14:34 of the game. Ben Blacker had 36 saves in the loss for WMU.
On the power play, SCSU was 1-7 in the game and WMU was 2-2.
