Winona State Rallies Past Men’s Basketball In Overtime, 102-100

Winona, Minn. – Despite shooting nearly 60 percent from the field in the game, the St. Cloud State men's basketball program (11-6, 7-4 NSIC) lost to Winona State (12-6, 7-5 NSIC) by 102-100 score in overtime at McCown Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 13, on the road.
The team had an outstanding shooting game at season-best 59.7 percent from the field (37-for-62), 53.8 percent from three-point range (14-for-26) and 80 percent from the line (12-for-15), but were outscored 55-47 in the second half and 11-9 in overtime to take the loss. Winona State shot 54.5 percent from the field (36-for-66), 56.7 percent from three-point range (17-for-30) and 86.7 percent from the free throw line (13-for-15). The Warriors also held a 30-24 edge on the boards
Junior Gage Davis scored a season-high 29 points. He also had eight rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal. Senior Jon Averkamp picked up 23 points. Junior Sean Smith totaled 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and four blocks. Senior Andy Foley recorded 15 points and three rebounds. Junior Brindley Theisen had eight points. Sophomore Trevon Marshall recorded six points. Freshman Tristen Hull chipped in with four tallies. Junior Adam Heede-Andersen tied for the team lead with his five assists.
Winona State had six players reach double figures and were led by 33 points from Corey Jeffs. Caleb Wagner totaled 20 points, eight assists and two steals. Devin Whitelow picked up 14 points and four rebounds. Kevion Taylor had 12 points. Tommy Gathje totaled 15 points. Connor Flack had a steady game with 12 points and eight rebounds
SCSU held a 44-36 lead at the half. The Warriors shot 64 percent from the field in the second half though to score 51 points. The Huskies were able to tie the game when Davis knocked down a three-pointer with just four seconds remaining in the game. In overtime the team found themselves trailing by five points when Averkamp hit a three with 34 seconds remaining to get the team within two points, 102-100. Winona State then missed a shot and set up a last second potential game-winning shot for SCSU. That shot was missed though to keep the final score at 102-100 Winona State. The game featured four tied scores and 10 lead changes throughout.
St. Cloud State men's basketball team now returns home to host No.9 Northern State on Friday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m. and MSU Moorhead on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m.
