#3/5 St. Cloud State Hockey faces #9/13 Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 26-27

The #3/5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (14-5-3, 8-3-1 NCHC) will be on the road this weekend for games at #9/13 Minnesota Duluth (13-10-3, 7-70 NCHC). On Friday, Jan. 26, the Huskies and Bulldogs will play a 7:07 p.m. game at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minn. The weekend will wrap up on Saturday, Jan. 27 with a 7:07 p.m. game at Amsoil Arena between SCSU and UMD.

IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #3 ranking in the 2017-18 USA TODAY/USA Hockey Division I poll on Dec. 11. SCSU also gained a #5 ranking in the USCHO.com poll this week...St. Cloud State was picked as the #2 team in the 2017-18 preseason NCHC poll. Of note, the Huskies received votes in the final USCHO.com poll of 2016-17. UMD is ranked #13/9 in both polls this week. THIS SERIES IS FOR THE DOGS: In play against UMD, the Huskies own a 66-49-9 series lead dating back to 1946-47. SCSU is 63-45-8 during the Division I era of the season. In the last five games of this series, SCSU owns a 3-2-0 edge and a 4-6-0 lead in the last 10 games of the series...earlier this season, SCSU gained a 5-3 and 5-0 shutout against UMD at the HNHC on Nov. 3-4, 2017...Last year, SCSU lost a pair of 5-3 decisions against UMD at the HBNHC on Nov. 4-5, 2016. At Amsoil Arena, SCSU scored a 2-1 win on Jan. 13, 2017 and a 4-3 OT loss on Jan. 14, 2017. In play on neutral ice, the Huskies lost a close 2-1 OT match against the Bulldogs in the title game of the North Star Cup at the Xcel Energy Center in 2016-17.
OLYMPIC DREAMS: The USA men's hockey team will feature two SCSU Huskies at the Winter Olympic Games in 2018. Current SCSU blueliner Will Borgen has been selected to the team along with former Husky forward Garrett Roe. Borgen and Roe will join a list of 15 Huskies who have competed in the Olympics. Other former SCSU hockey players to play for Team USA include Bret Hedican (1992 and 2006), Ryan Malone (2010), Mark Parrish (2006), Matt Cullen (2006) and Andreas Nodl (2014). Of note, former Husky hockey player Rikard Gronberg will serve as head coach for Team Sweden at the 2018 Winter Games. Roe played for SCSU from 2007-11 and ranks first in the team records with 113 assists and third with 178 points (65g/113a). He is currently playing professional hockey in Switzerland this winter. Borgen has 1g/7a for the Huskies this season.
THE WEEKEND UPDATE: On Hockey Day Minnesota, the Huskies lost a tough 5-2 match against #7/8 Minnesota State at the HBNHC on Jan. 20. The Mavericks bolted to a 2-0 lead in the first before the Huskies countered with a goal at 18:55 by Jon Lizotte with assists from Patrick Newell and Blake Lizotte. In the second, MSU answered with the eventual game winner to make it 3-2 before the Huskies' Robby Jackson scored at 6:39 with helpers from Ryan Poehling and Easton Brodzinski. That goal proved to be the last for SCSU as MSU added one more goal at 15:00 of the second and an ENG at 19:43 of the third. In the game, SCSU outshot the Mavericks 30-26. SCSU was 0-2 and MSU was 1-1 on the power play. Jeff Smith was SCSU's goalie of record with 10 saves in 26:14 of play. David Hrenak completed the game in the nets for SCSU with 11 saves in 32:04 of play. Of note, this game is the last regular season non-conference game of 2017-18 for the Huskies.
SCORING UPDATE:Robby Jackson currently leads the Huskies this season with 10 goals. He is tied for the team's point lead along with Mikey Eyssimont at 24 points, while blueliner Jimmy Schuldt has 23 points this season. Schuldt paces SCSU with 17 assists this year.
100-POINTS IN RANGE: Mikey Eyssimont needs 13 more points to join SCSU's 100-point club. He currently has 37g/50a during his career with the Huskies.
100 GAMES: Jimmy Schuldt's next game will be his 100th consecutive career game with the Huskies. He has not missed a game during his college career.
ONLY AT SCSU: St. Cloud State is the lone NCAA school in the nation with an active men's hockey player and an active women's hockey player playing hockey at the upcoming Winter Olympics. Will Borgen will play for Team USA and SCSU goalie Janine Alder will be joining the Swiss women's hockey team at the upcoming Winter Games.
SCSU TEAM NOTES: SCSU has outscored its opponents 85-55 this season...SCSU is 9-4-1 in action against top 20 ranked teams this season. SCSU will face another top 20 ranked team this weekend at UMD. If you count the upcoming games, SCSU has faced nationally ranked opponents in 16 games (out of 24) this season. According to the KRACH rankings, SCSU owns a #4 national ranking for strength of schedule as of Jan. 25. In the latest Pairwise rankings as of Jan. 25 at 10 a.m., the Huskies rank third behind Nortre Dame and Cornell...Jimmy Schuldt leads the team with a +16 ranking in the plus/minus.

He has 6g/17a this winter for the Huskies...David Hrenak ranks fifth in the nation with a 1.82 GAA average and he ranks fourth in the nation with a .939 save rate...Jeff Smith ranks 5th in the nation with a winning percentage of .750 (9-2-3)...the Huskies rank 1st in the nation with a scoring rate of 3.86 goals per game...SCSU ranks 13th in the nation with a goals against average of 2.50 goals allowed per game.
