Men’s Basketball Earns 71-55 Victory Over Minnesota Crookston

St. Cloud, Minn. - Junior Gage Davis scored a season-high 26 points to lead the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (11-4, 7-2 NSIC) over Minnesota Crookston (8-8, 5-5 NSIC) on Saturday, Jan. 6, at Halenbeck Hall.
Davis totaled 26 points on 11-for-20 shooting from the field. He also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Senior Jon Averkamp recorded 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Junior Sean Smith had a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Smith also totaled three assists, six blocks and three steals. Junior Brindley Theisen totaled nine points. Junior Adam Heede-Andersen had six rebounds and five assists. Senior Andy Foley picked up five points off the bench.
Minnesota Crookston was led by Harrison Cleary's 18 points. Josh Collins had 10 points and eight rebounds. Gable Smith recorded nine points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and three steals.
The Huskies shot 50.9 percent from the field (29-for-57), 42.1 percent from three-point range (8-for-19) and 41.7 percent from the free throw line (5-12). The team also had 36 rebounds, 21 assists, six blocks and five steals. Minnesota Crookston, who came into the game as one of the top shooting team's in the conference, shot 37.9 percent from the field (22-for-58), 19.4 percent from three-point range (4-for-21) and 77.9 percent from the foul line (7-for-9).
The Huskies led 39-25 at the half and were able to keep control throughout in game that featured no tied scores or lead changes. The team's largest lead with 18 with 31 seconds remaining in the game on a layup from Davis.
In the second half, UMC whittled the lead down to five points, 49-44, on the second of two made free throws from Josh Collins. The Huskies then went on a 13-2 rally capped off by the second of two made foul shots from Davis at the 3:07 mark. The lead hit 17 on a made three from Davis with 1:52 remaining in the contest before settling for a 16-point win, 71-55, after a made jumper from Nate Lorenz as time expired.
St. Cloud State men's basketball team gets back on the road and travel to take on Upper Iowa on Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. and Winona State on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.
