#1/2 St. Cloud State men's hockey downs #10 Minnesota, 5-2

The #1/2 ranked St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (13-2-3, 7-2-1 NCHC) continued its season of success with a big 5-2 victory over #10 Minnesota (12-10-1, 4-7-1 B10) on Saturday, Jan. 6 before a sellout crowd of 5,714 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory improved SCSU's home record to 10-0-1 on the season and it was the fifth consecutive victory for the Huskies against Minnesota.  The two teams will complete their non-conference weekend series with a 6 p.m. game at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis on Sunday, Jan. 7.
The Gophers took an early lead in the contest with a goal at 2:34 by Mike Szmatula.  The tally proved to be the last lead of the game for Minnesota as SCSU's Blake Winiecki tied the contest at 1-1 with a power play goal at 8:49.  He was assisted on the play by Robby Jackson and Mikey Eyssimont.

Eyssimont stepped into the spotlight at :50 of the second period with a highlight reel goal that was assisted by Patrick Newell and Blake Lizotte. Â The goal gave SCSU a 2-1 edge. Â

Easton Brodzinski added the game winner for the Huskies with his seventh goal of the season at 5:36 of the second.  Kevin Fitzgerald and Jackson each had helpers on the goal, which made the score 3-1.

In the third period, Eyssimont stretched SCSU's lead to 4-1 with his team leading eighth goal of the year at 1:27.  Lizzote and Jack Ahcan each had assists on the play.  Minnesota narrowed the gap to 4-2 with a goal by Brent Gates at 7:06 of the third.  The rally was short lived for the Gophers as SCSU hit back at 12:59 with a goal by Ahcan.  This was Ahcan's second goal of the season and it was assisted by Newell and Lizotte, which was the ninth assist of the year for both players.Â

On the night, Lizotte had three assist along with Eyssimont with two goals and one assist.
SCSUÂ outshot the Gophers 34-23 as goalie Jeff Smith had 21 saves to gain his eighth win of the season for the Huskies. Â On the power play, SCSU was 1-5 and UM was 0-4. Â SCSU was particulary dominant in the second period as the Huskies outshot the Gophers 15-5.
