#1/2 Huskies to face #10 Minnesota on Jan. 6-7

The #1/2 ranked St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (12-2-3, 7-2-1 NCHC) will play a home-home series against #10 Minnesota (12-9-1, 4-7-1 B10) on Jan. 6-7. The Huskies will host the Gophers on Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. (6:30 p.m. start). The series will wrap up on Sunday, Jan. 7 with a 6:00 p.m. game at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.

OCKEY DAY MINNESOTA: The city of St. Cloud will host the 2018 Hockey Day Minnesota on Jan. 20. This day celebrates the sport of hockey in the state of Minnesota and it will include a weekend of fun activities in St. Cloud. On Jan. 19, the SCSU Men's and Women's Hockey Alumni teams will be playing a game on the outdoor rink, which will be set up at Eastman Park on the shores of Lake George in St. Cloud. On Jan. 20, the SCSU women's hockey team will play UMD at the outdoor rink at 1 p.m., while the SCSU-Minnesota State game at 5 p.m. will be played back at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center and featured on Fox Sports North Plus. The day will also include high school games at the outdoor rink along with a concert and fan activities. For complete details, please visit scsuhuskies.com/HockeyDayMinnesota
WATCH THE HUSKIES: Fans can watch the SCSU-UM game on Jan. 6 on the CBS Sports Network with the crew of Ben Holden, Dave Starman and Shireen Saski calling the game. The game on Jan. 7 will be televised on Fox Sports North and Fox College Sports. Fans will also be able to watch the Jan. 7 game on TSN2 and TSN Go out of Canada.
IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #2 ranking in the 2017-18 USA TODAY/USA Hockey Division I poll on Dec. 11. SCSU also gained a #1 ranking in the USCHO.com poll this week...St. Cloud State was picked as the #2 team in the 2017-18 preseason NCHC poll. Of note, the Huskies received votes in the final USCHO.com poll of 2016-17. Minnesota is ranked #10 in both polls this week.
SUPER START: SCSU's 12-2-3 start is the best 17-game start to a season since the Huskies went 14-2-1 to open the 2001-02 season.
USA, USA: SCSU head coach Bob Motzko and Director of Hockey Operations/Video Coordinator Matt Chapman are currently working with Team USA at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. Motzko will once again serve as head coach for Team USA at the World Juniors and Chapman will serve as the team's video coach. SCSU sophomore forward Ryan Poehling is also on Team USA in 2018...On the topic of the World Juniors, SCSU freshman goalie David Hrenak is on the roster for the Slovakia National Junior Team, which competed at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. Team USA will play in the semi's against Team Sweden with hopes of advancing to the title game on Jan. 5. Motzko, Chapman and current SCSU defenseman Jack Ahcan were part of the Team USA squad that won gold at the World Junior Championships in 2017.

OLYMPIC DREAMS: The USA men's hockey team will feature two SCSU Huskies at the Winter Olympic Games in 2018. Current SCSU blueliner Will Borgen has been selected to the team along with former Husky forward Garrett Roe. Borgen and Roe will join a list of 15 Huskies who have competed in the Olympics. Other former SCSU hockey players to play for Team USA include Bret Hedican (1992 and 2006), Ryan Malone (2010), Mark Parrish (2006), Matt Cullen (2006) and Andreas Nodl (2014). Of note, former Husky hockey player Rikard Gronberg will serve as head coach for Team Sweden at the 2018 Winter Games. Roe played for SCSU from 2007-11 and ranks first in the team records with 113 assists and third with 178 points (65g/113a). He is currently playing professional hockey in Switzerland this winter. Borgen has 1g/7a for the Huskies this season.
OUT EAST: The Huskies returned from their east coast trip to with a pair of ties at Princeton. SCSU skated to a 3-3 OT decision on Dec. 29 and repeated with a 2-2 OT game on Dec. 30 at Princeton. SCSU now owns an 8-game unbeaten streak headed into the weekend series against Minnesota. Jimmy Schuldt paced SCSU on the trip with one goal and two assists, while Jacob Benson and Blake Winiecki each had one goal and one assist in the series. In the 3-3 tie on Dec. 29, the Huskies outshot the Tigers 30-6 in the third and OT period combined.
TOP DOGS: Defenseman and post-season honors candidate Jimmy Schuldt leads the Huskies with 16 assists and 22 points. He also owns an impressive +21 rating on the plus/minus this season at the SCSU...Overall, the Huskies have enjoyed a talent rich team in 2017-18. A total of seven SCSU players have charted 10 or more points this season and eight have scored five or more goals this season...Junior Robby Jackson has scored seven goals this season to lead the Huskies, while Mikey Eyssimont, Jack Poehling, Easton Brodzinski, Jacob Benson and Jimmy Schuldt rank second on the team with six goals apiece.
IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS: SCSU is second in the nation in scoring this season with an average of 4.06 goals per game. Of note, Minnesota ranks 40th in the nation at 2.73 goals per game...On defense, SCSU ranks fifth in the nation at 2.12 goals allowed per game. SCSU also ranks second with the nation's best scoring margin at 1.94 this season...On special teams, SCSU ranks fourth in the nation on the power play at 25.9 percent (21/81) and 21st on the penalty kill at 82.9 percent (58/70).
IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS II: Jimmy Schuldt paces all NCAA DI blueliners this season with a scoring average of 1.29 ppg. He ranks fourth in the nation among all DI players with .94 assists per game (16)...Rookie netminder David Hrenak currently ranks third in the nation with a save percentage of .947 (198 saves), while junior goalie Jeff Smith ranks fifth in the nation with a .928 save rate (310 saves )..SCSU goalie tandem also ranks high in the goals against category this winter. Hrenak ranks third in the nation at 1.82 and Smith ranks 11th with a 2.14 GAA in 2017-18. TOUGH SCHEDULE: SCSU owns an 8-2-1 record against nationally ranked teams (top 20 at the time SCSU played opponent) this season, which includes victories over North Dakota, Omaha, Minnesota State Mankato, Boston College and Minnesota Duluth. This weekend will mark the 12th and 13th games this season that the Huskies have played a team ranked among the nation's top 20 teams.

DID YOU KNOW? The last time that SCSU charted back-to-back ties before the weekend at Princeton on Dec. 29-30 was a pair of ties at North Dakota on Mar. 7-8, 2008. SCSU tied those games 1-1 and 2-2.
