Huskies maintain hold on first place in NCHC standings
The #2/3 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (20-6-4, 14-4-2 NCHC) maintained its hold on first place in the NCHC standings and also gained the squad's 20th victory of the season with a big 4-2 win at #15 Western Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 17 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The victory marked the 14th time since 1987-88 and the eighth time during the Bob Motzko era (since 2005-06) that the Huskies have hit the 20-win plateau. SCSU will continue its 2017-18 season with a pair of key game against Denver on Feb. 23-24 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Both SCSU and Denver are battling for the two top spots in the league standings and important NCHC points will be on line next weekend on the ice in St. Cloud.

In the win at WMU, the Huskies opened the game's scoring at 4:16 of the second period with a power play tally by Easton Brodzinski. He was assisted on the goal by Jimmy Schuldt and Patrick Newell. This was Brodzinski's 12th goal of the season and it was Schuldt's team leading 24th assist of the campaign. A Hobey Baker candidate, Schuldt tops all NCAA DI blueliners with a scoring rate of 1.03 ppg (7g/24a).
The Broncos replied with a shorthanded goal at 6:32 of the second by Josh Passolt and they took a 2-1 lead minutes later with a goal at 9:35 of the second period by Dawson Pietro.
WMU held the led through the end of the second before the Huskies put on their rally caps. At 5:43 of the third period, Jack Poehling tied the game up at 2-2 with his seventh goal of the year. The assist were a family affair as his brothers Ryan Poehling and Nick Poehling issued the two assists. This was Ryan Poehling's 17th assist of the year and the fourth for Nick Poehling.
The game winner was then collected by Mikey Eyssimont at 11:19 of the third period with power play assists from Jack Ahcan and Robby Jackson. The play provided Jackson with his 20th assist of the year, while Ahcan now has 12 assists.
To end the night, Eyssimont iced the contest with an ENG at 18:39 of the third period. Newell and Blake Lizotte each had assists on the play, which was Eyssimont's 14th goal of the season. Eyssimont and Jackson now share the team's goal scoring lead at 14 apiece in 2017-18. Of note, Jackson still owns the team's point scoring lead with 34 this winter.
On the night, SCSU outshot the Broncos 37-22 and it was 2-5 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill. David Hrenak gained the start between the pipes for SCSU and came away with the win and 20 saves. He now owns a 9-4-0 record and a 1.96 GAA this season.
