#1 St. Cloud State men's hockey battles #3/4 Denver in NCHC showdown

The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (20-6-4, 14-4-2 NCHC) will be back home this weekend for games at the HBNHC against #3/4 Denver (17-7-6, 11-5-4 NCHC). The game on Friday, Feb. 23 will begin at 7:38 p.m. and the game on Saturday, Feb. 24 will start at 7:07 p.m.
The game on Feb. 23 has been designated as a Youth Night at SCSU. All youth in grades K-12 will be admitted to this game for free when accompanied by a paid adult.
The game on Feb. 24 has been designated as SCSU Senior Night. The Huskies' three seniors on the 2017-18 will be saluted as they play in their final regular season home game for the Huskies at the HBNHC. This group includes defenseman Mika Ilvonen, forward Judd Peterson and forward Blake Winiecki. This group of seniors has helped lead the Huskies to 87 victories, two NCAA tournament bids and the 2016 NHCH Frozen faceoff title over the past four seasons.
$1 HOT DOGS! Fans will be able to purchase delicious hot dogs from the SCSU concession stands at the HBNHC during both games vs. Denver on Feb. 23-24.

IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #1 ranking in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey Division I poll this week. SCSU also gained a #1 ranking in the USCHO.com poll this week...St. Cloud State was picked as the #2 team in the 2017-18 preseason NCHC poll. Of note, the Huskies received votes in the final USCHO.com poll of 2016-17. DU is ranked #3/4 this week.
CONFERENCE RACE: SCSU currently leads the NCHC race with 45 points, while Denver is second with 40 points. UMD and UND are in a tie for third with 30 points apiece. Both SCSU and Denver have four games apiece remaining on their 2017-18 NCHC regular season schedules, which represents a total of 12 potential league points for the each team. Of note, the Huskies won the Penrose Cup with a first place finish in the NCHC during the 2013-14 season. AWARD WINNERS: The following Huskies have been named to the 2018 NCHC All-Academic Team: Blake Winiecki, Mika Ilvonen, Jimmy Schuldt, Mikey Eyssimont, Patrick Newell, Jon Lizotte, Clark Kuster, Jack Poehling, David Zevnik, Robby Jackson and Jeff Smith. NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete award winners were: Jimmy Schuldt, Jon Lizotte and Clark Kuster.

THE WEEKEND UPDATE: The Huskies maintained their all-time unbeaten streak in games played at Western Michigan on Feb. 16-17. SCSU opened the weekend in Kalamazoo with a 5-5 OT decision against the Broncos. In that game, SCSU took a 3-2 lead in the first with goals by Mika Ilvonen, Easton Brodzinski and Ryan Poehling. In the second period, WMU knotted the game at 3-3 before Jimmy Schuldt tied it again in the 3rd periof at 4-4 with a PPG. At 19:11 of the third period, Ilvonen sent the game into OT with his game-tying goal, which made it 5-5. After the OT session, Schuldt won the 3x3 OT session with a goal at :35. In the game, SCSU hit a season game-high with 48 shots on goal while going 2-6 on the PP. Jeff Smith was the goalie of record with 27 saves...On Feb. 17, SCSU rolled to a 4-2 victory. Easton Brodzinski charted the game's first goal with a PP marker at 4:16 of the second. WMU rallied to take a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period before three unanswered goals by Jack Poehling and two from Mikey Eyssimont won the game. SCSU outshot the Broncos 37-22 as David Hrenak made 20 saves in the win for the Huskies. SCSU was 2-5 on the PP and 2-2 on the PK in the game.
OLYMPIC HUSKIES: The USA men's hockey team featured two SCSU Huskies at the Winter Olympic Games in 2018. Current SCSU blueliner Will Borgen was selected to the team along with former Husky forward Garrett Roe. Borgen and Roe join a list of 15 Huskies who have competed in the Olympics. Other former SCSU hockey players to play for Team USA include Bret Hedican (1992 and 2006), Ryan Malone (2010), Mark Parrish (2006), Matt Cullen (2006) and Andreas Nodl (2014). Of note, former Husky hockey player Rikard Gronberg serves as head coach for Team Sweden at the 2018 Winter Games. Roe played for SCSU from 2007-11 and ranks first in the team records with 113 assists and third with 178 points (65g/113a). He is currently playing professional hockey in Switzerland this winter. Borgen has 2g/10a for the Huskies this season.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Mika Ilvonen was named the NCHC Defensive Player of the Week and Easton Brodzinski was named the NCHC Rookie of the Week on Feb. 19 for their efforts against WMU. Ilvonen had two goals and was a defensive dynamo for the Huskies in the games, while Brodzinski charted two goals and one assist at WMU.
ON THE WAY TO 100: Mikey Eyssimont needs five more points to join SCSU's 100 point club. He had two goals at WMU, which moved his point total to 95 (42g/53a). He would become the 30th player in SCSU history to score 100-plus points.
TOP DOGS: Mikey Eyssimont and Robby Jackson pace the team this season with 14 goals apiece. Jackson leads the Huskies this year with 34 points, while Jimmy Schuldt leads the team with 24 assists, 62 blocks and he leads the nation with a +22. David Hrenak owns a 1.96 GAA and a .927 save rate to lead the club this year, while Jeff Smith leads SCSU with 11 wins in the nets.
HOBEY HOPEFULL: Postseason honors candidate Jimmy Schuldt ranks first among the nation's defensive players with a scoring rate of 1.03 PPG. He has 7g/24 for 31 points. He leads the nation with a +22 on the plus/minus and he is among the nation's top shot blockers with 62. Schuldt also ranks 10th in the nation with 0.80 assists per game. In his career, Schuldt has 76 points (25g/71a) and currently ranks 9th in the all-time scoring list for SCSU blueliners (one point behind Bret Hedican, who currently ranks 8th with 77 career points).
NEW GUYS: Blake Lizotte is SCSU's top scoring rookie with 21 points this season (5g/16a). Easton Brodzinski leads SCSU's rookies with 12 goals (19 points) and Kevin Fitzgerald has 5g/12a this winter. In comparison, Easton Brodzinski's brother Jonny Brodzinski had 22g/11a during his rookie campaign at SCSU in 2012-13. Jonny currenlty plays for the LA Kings in the NHL. Their Dad, Mike Brodzinski had 18g/29a during his freshman season with the Huskies in 1985-86.
SCSU NOTES: SCSU was 3-4-0 during the month of January and the Huskies are now 5-0-1 during the month of February...SCSU is 13-5-4 when they outshot their opponent this season, and it is 7-1-0 when the Huskies are outshot by their opponent...SCSU is 13-0-0 when it owns the lead after the second period in games this season...SCSU is 12-0-4 when the Huskies score first in a game this season.

DENVER NUGGETS: Denver is the only team to sweep the Huskies in 2017-18. The Pioneers charted a 4-2 and 5-1 sweep at Magness Arena on Nov. 10-11...Mikey Eyssimont, a resident of Denver suburb Littleton, Colo., has scored 3g/4a vs. the Pioneers during his college career...the last time this series was played in St. Cloud, the Huskies posted a 3-2 OT win and a 3-1 loss on Jan. 20-21, 2017.
