Women's hockey releases 2018-19 schedule

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The United States may have just celebrated its 242nd birthday this past Wednesday but the St. Cloud State University women's hockey team is already gearing up for its new season, as the Huskies announced their 2018-19 schedule Thursday afternoon.
SCSU kicks off the new year with an exhibition game scheduled against the Hockey Training Institute at home on Sept. 22. The Huskies will then open the regular season with a two-game series against the University of Connecticut (UCONN) the weekend of September 28-29 and will host RIT in its home opener October 5-6.
"We are very excited about our 2018-19 schedule," head women's hockey coach Eric Rud said in a recent statement. "We have a great incoming class of recruits and signees, which will help us continue to rise up the WCHA rankings this season."
Here are some important dates/things to know about St. Cloud State's 2018-19 schedule:
9 – The Huskies will open their regular season in the month of September in a series against UCONN. The series, set to take place in Storrs, Connecticut September 28-29, will mark the second-consecutive year St. Cloud State has opened its season with a two-game series against UNCONN.
10/5 – The Huskies home opener will take place on October 5, when they host RIT at 6:07 p.m. in Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
24 – The Huskies will play 24 WCHA games during the 2018-19 season, including series against the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State-Mankato in the opening month of the season. In total, the WCHA features seven teams, including St. Cloud State, Bemidji State, Minnesota, Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota-Mankato, Ohio State and Wisconsin, several of which have been ranked in the top-10 in recent history.
11/20 – The Huskies will play in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game set to take place on November 20. St. Cloud State will take on conference rival Bemidji State in a non-conference game on that day, which is set to begin at 6 p.m. in Brainerd, Minnesota.
1st – The Huskies are also set to partake in the inaugural Minnesota Cup Tournament, which will be played at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota January 5-6. The tournament will feature four Minnesota teams, including Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota State-Mankato, St. Cloud State and host Minnesota. The Huskies will face the Mavericks in the opening round of the tournament on January 5 and will play in either the consolation or championship game on January 6.
7 – All seven teams in the WCHA will advance to the conference tournament during the season. The No. 1 seed in the tournament will earn a bye week, while the other six teams play in a best-of-three series the weekend of March 1-3. The winners of these series will then advance to the WCHA Final Face off, which will take place at Ridder Arena March 8-9.
