Huskies pick up first win since October 17, earn points in back-to-back times since late September
BEMIDJI, Minn. – No. 10 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (5-9-1, 2-8-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) earned its first win since October 17 behind a 21-save shutout from sophomore goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland) and three points from freshman forward Payton Remick (Roseau, Minn.). The Huskies took down Bemidji State (3-9-1, 1-9-1 WCHA) 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, earning points in back-to-back games for the first time since late September.
SCSU opened the scoring halfway through the first period when Remick netted her first of the day. She forced a turnover off a defensive zone faceoff and the puck went to senior forward Svenja Voigt (Cologne, Germany), who delivered a beautiful stretch pass to Remick who was streaking down the center of the ice and went on to beat the Bemidji State glove-side.
The Huskies doubled their lead early in the second period when redshirt junior forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) scored her fifth goal of the year. Graduate defender Grace Wolfe (Owatonna, Minn.) sent a shot in from the right point and Zimmermann was in the low slot to tip it into the back of the net.
St. Cloud State took a 3-0 lead seven minutes into the third period when Remick scored her second goal of the game. Senior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) skated through the high slot and found Remick who was unmarked on the doorstep. The Huskies scored their fourth and final goal with just under two minutes left in the game. Remick won a board battle on the end wall and the puck went to Farrell who sent a perfect backhand pass to freshman forward Reese Strauts (Brandon, Wis.) in front of the crease that she put in the back of the net for her first NCAA goal.
The Huskies wrap up their series against Bemidji State on Saturday. Puck drop from the Sanford Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. Links to each coverage option can be found on the SCSU Women's Hockey schedule page.
