Huskies score four unanswered goals in third period before falling in overtime, 6-5
BEMIDJI, Minn. – No. 10 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (5-10-1, 2-9-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) scored four unanswered goals in the third period to take its first lead of the game but conceded an extra-attacker goal with 31 seconds left in regulation before falling 6-5 in overtime to Bemidji State on Saturday afternoon at the Sanford Center in Bemidji.
The Beavers (4-9-1, 2-9-1 WCHA) took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission and extended its advantage to three with a power play tally 2:40 into the second period before SCSU scored its first goal of the game just under four and a half minutes later. Redshirt junior forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) took the puck from the defensive goal line all the way to the offensive goal line where she found a streaking junior forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) who got behind the BSU defense. Bemidji State stretched its lead back to four later in the second period and took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission.
The Huskies offense woke up in the third period, scoring three goals in just 3:25 of game time to tie the game at four with 12:33 left in the game. The first goal came from freshman defender Sydney Lamb (Lombard, Ill.) who beat the BSU netminder blocker side after the puck squirted out to her on the right dot. Just 43 seconds later, junior forward Payton Holloway (Tomah, Wis.) scored a nearly identical goal, beating the Beaver goaltender blocker side with a shot from the right point. The third goal in the flurry came in a similar style from graduate defender Grace Wolfe (Owatonna, Minn.), who beat the goalie blocker side with a slap shot from just outside the right circle. It was the Huskies first shorthanded goal of the season.
Zimmermann gave the Huskies their first lead of the game with 4:29 left in regulation after burying a bouncing puck in front of the net. With 2:05 left, BSU emptied their net in an attempt to tie the game and after the Huskies were unable to convert on a pair of empty net opportunities, the Beavers scored an extra attacker goal with 32 seconds left, to send the game into overtime.
Bemidji State converted a 1-on-1 breakaway 1:03 into the extra period to take the game and extra point, 6-5.
