Sundelin nets second career overtime game-winner, Huskies earn first ranked win since Sept. 26
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore forward Sofianna Sundelin's (Ulvila, Finland) first collegiate hat trick and second career overtime game-winning goal led No. 14 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (6-10-1, 2-9-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) to a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 12 Colgate on Friday afternoon at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex in the nation's capital to open the D1 in DC event.
Sundelin gave the Huskies an early 1-0 lead when she scored her first power play goal of the season off assists from fellow junior forwards Payton Holloway (Tomah, Wis.) and Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec). Just over three minutes later, the Raiders (8-8-1, 4-3-1 Eastern College Athletic Conference) scored an even strength goal to tie the game at one late in the first period.
Sundelin scored her second power play goal of the game with just over 6:15 left in the second period to give SCSU its second lead of the day. Colgate responded yet again with a power play goal of its own nine minutes into the third period and neither team was unable to score in the remainder of the period, sending the game into overtime.
Early in the extra five minutes, a Colgate shot took a heavy bounce of the blocker of SCSU's sophomore goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland), Sundelin picked up the puck at the blue line with a full head of steam and nobody between her and the Raider goalie. Sundelin skated down and beat the Colgate netminder glove side to complete her first career hat trick and second career overtime game-winning goal.
