#1 St. Cloud State drops close 3-1 match at #5 UMD on Jan. 11

In a battle between two of the nation's top five ranked men's college hockey teams, #1 St. Cloud State University (14-3-2, 6-1-2 NCHC) lost a close 3-1 battle against #5 Minnesota Duluth (12-5-2, 5-3-1 NCHC) on Friday, Jan. 11 at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, MInn.
The Huskies dominated the stat sheet as they outshot the Bulldogs 14-6 in the first period and 31-18 in the game. The two teams will complete their weekend series in Duluth with a 7:07 p.m. game at Amsoil Arena on Saturday, Jan. 12. Fans can listen to the game on The River 97.6 FM and KVSC FM 88.1, and they can watch the game live on NCHC.tv/scsu.
UMD opened the game's scoring on Jan. 11 with a goal at 8:50 of the first period by Nick Swaney with an assist from Peter Krieger. The Huskies then tied the contest at 1-1 with a marker by senior Robby Jackson at 16:20 of the second period. Assists on the play were set up by Jack Ahcan and Sam Hentges. This was Jackson's ninth goal of the season and his 101st career point as a Husky. The assist was Ahcan's team leading 15th of the year and his 51st career assist.
The two squads staged a defensive battle until midway through the third period when UMD's Noah Cates scored the game winner at 9:53 with an unassisted goal. The Bulldogs padded their lead to 3-1 with the game's final goal at 18:22 of the third by Justin Richards.
The Huskies outshot the Bulldogs 31-18 in the game as David Hrenak was SCSU's goalie of record with 15 saves. Hunter Shepherd made 30 saves in the win for UMD. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-5 and UMD did not have a power play opportunity in the game.
