
St. Cloud State men's hockey on the road to North Dakota

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (2-4-4, 0-0-0 NCHC) will continue its 2019-20 season with a pair of road games at the #5/6 University of North Dakota (8-1-2, 3-0-1 NCHC) on Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23. The game time on Nov. 22 is slated for 7:37 p.m. CT and the game time on Nov. 23 is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. CT. Both games will be played at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. IN THE POLLS: The Huskies did not receive votes in the USCHO.com or USA TODAY/USA HOCKEY weekly polls this week.
NCHC CHAMPS: The Huskies claimed the 2018-19 NCHC championship with a 5-0 win at Omaha on Feb. 23. This marks the third time the Huskies have won the Penrose Cup, which is the most of any team in the NCHC. SCSU also won the NCHC regular season title in 2014, 2018 and 2019.
NCHC OPENER: The Huskies opened their 2019-20 NCHC season with a pair of losses to Colorado College at the HBNHC. On Nov. 15, SCSU lost a 4-2 match against the Tigers and it lost a 5-2 game against CC on Nov. 16. This marked the first time since a pair of defeats against UND on Nov. 18-19, 2016 that SCSU has been swept at home. Of note, the last time SCSU lost two consecutive regular season games was Jan. 20, 2018 (vs. MSU Mankato) and Jan. 26, 2018 (at UMD). In the loss on Nov. 15, SCSU's goals were charted by Will Hammer and Jami Krannila in the second period. CC outshot the Huskies 33-22 in the contest and the Tigers were also 3-of-3 on the PP in the game...on Nov. 16, SCSU goals were scored by Easton Brodzinski and Chase Brand on the power play as CC outshot the Huskies 32-29. SCSU was a perfect 2-of-2 on the PK in the game.
FIRST GOAL: Jami Krannila, a resident of Finland, scored his first collegiate goal in SCSU's 4-2 loss vs. CC on Nov. 15. He was assisted on the play by Easton Brodzinski and Sam Hentges at 13:41 of the second period. Krannila enjoyed a strong showing vs. CC as he also had two assists in the Huskies' game on Nov. 16. On the season, Krannila now has one goal and three assists in 10 games played. He played during the 2018-19 season with Sioux Falls of the USHL.
HAMMER TIME: SCSU junior forward Will Hammer scored his second goal of the season in the game vs. CC on Nov. 15. He scored at 7:25 of the second period with a helper from Jake Wahlin. Hammer has played in eight games for SCSU this season.
OPPONENT NOTES: The Huskies owned a 1-1-0 record against North Dakota in 2018-19. Last year, SCSU posted a 3-1 win over UND on Jan. 25, 2019 and a 5-1 loss at UND on Jan. 26, 2019 at the REA. SCSU did not play UND at the HBNHC in 2018-19. SCSU will match-up against UND at home this season on Feb. 21-22 at the HBNHC...in the last seven meetings between these two teams, SCSU is 4-1-2 ...UND is currently ranked #5/6 in the national polls this week...Nick Poehling has scored 3 goals vs. UND during his career and Easton Brodzinski has posted 2g/4a vs. the Fighting Hawks...Jordan Kawaguchi, a sophomore forward, leads UND with 3g/11a in 2019-20, while Westin Michaud has 6g/3a...Adam Scheel is UND's top goalie with a .924 SV% and a 1.53 GAA (8-1-2)...SCSU is 11-18-5 in games played at the new REA... of note, SCSU has not played UND at the HBNHC since a series on Dec. 8-9, 2017.
YOUTH NIGHT: The SCSU home game on Dec. 13 has been designated as Youth Night. All youth in grades 12 or younger get into this game for FREE with a paid adult. TEDDY BEAR TOSS 2019: The annual Teddy Bear Toss will take place at St. Cloud State during the first intermission of the SCSU-Omaha game on Saturday, Dec. 14. Fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used Teddy Bear or stuffed animal/doll to the game and then throw them onto the ice during the first intermission. All toys collected during the Teddy Bear Toss will then be donated to the local Toys For Tots campaign, which helps the area's needy during the holiday season. HUSKIES HEADLINES: Easton Brodzinski added a power play goal to his totals in the SCSU game vs. CC on Nov. 16. He leads the club this winter with three power play goals and has ranks among SCSU's top 30 players all-time with 15 career PPGs in 87 games played with the Huskies. His brother Jonny Brodzinski had 21 PPGs at SCSU from 2012-15, while Jeff Saterdalen is SCSU's all-time PPG leader with 40 from 1988-92...Chase Brand added his second career goal in SCSU's game vs. CC on Nov. 16...Nick Poehling leads SCSU this season with 31 shots on goal...Sam Hentges saw his nine-game point streak snapped on Nov. 16. Over that 9-game stretch, Hentges posted six goals and 10 assists. He leads the team this season with 6g/10a and 16 points (and ranks 7th in the nation with 1.60 ppg - and first in the NCHC with 16 points)...Hentges ranks 2nd in the NCHC with six goals this season and Brodzinski ranks fourth in the NCHC with five goals...the Huskies have three SHGs this season and have only allowed one SHG in 2019-20.
