#1 St. Cloud State claims Penrose Cup with 5-0 victory at Omaha

The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (23-4-3, 15-2-3 NCHC won its second consecutive regular season National Collegiate Hockey Conference regular season championship thanks to a convincing 5-0 victory at Omaha (9-19-2, 5-14-1 NCHC) on Saturday, Feb. 23.
This marks the third time since the league was formed in 2013-14, that the Huskies have hoisted the Penrose Cup as the regular season league champs. SCSU won the Penrose Cup in 2013-14 and claimed its second league crown in 2017-18. This marks the first championship for Brett Larson, who is in his first season as head coach at SCSU.
The Huskies dominated the game from the start at Jack Poehling scored at 3:23 of the first period with assists from Jimmy Schuldt and Nick Poehling. The goal was Jack Poehling's seventh of the season. The Huskies padded their lead to 2-0 in the first period with a goal by Robby Jackson at 6:42 with assists from Blake Lizotte and Patrick Newell. Jackson now has 13 goals this season and 46 in his career at SCSU.
In the second period, SCSU stretched its lead to 3-0 with a goal by Jacob Benson at 12:12 with assists from Jake Wahlin and Nolan Walker. Benson has three goals this season for the Huskies.

The Huskies iced the contest in the third period with a goal by Blake Lizotte at :47 that made the tally 4-0. Jimmy Schuldt added the solo assist on the play, which was Schuldt's 19 helper of the year. In his career, Schuldt now has 73 career assists for the Huskies. The goal was Lizotte's 11th of the season.
To finish the scoring, Patrick Newell added his team leading 16th goal of the year at 4:33 of the third. He was assisted on the play by Jackson, who now has 29 points in 2018-19.
In the game, SCSU outshot the Mavericks 31-30 and it marked the ninth consecutive victory for SCSU against Omaha. David Hrenak earned the shutout in the game with 30 saves. He is now 18-3-2 this season with four shutouts to his credit.
