St. Cloud State baseball edged by UCO at NCAA tournament

The #15 St. Cloud State University baseball team (40-13) was the victim of a late ninth inning rally by the University of Central Oklahoma (37-18) in a tough 4-3 loss in first round play of the 2019 NCAA Division II Central Region tournament on Thursday, May 16 in Warrensburg, Mo.
The loss moves the Huskies into a match-up on Friday, May 17 against Missouri Southern in an elimination game at the NCAA tournament. The two teams will square off against each other at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the game will advance to face the loser of the game between Central Missouri and Central Oklahoma, which will take place at Noon on Friday, May 17. The third game on May 17 is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in Warrensburg. The tournament is scheduled to wrap-up on Saturday, May 18 with the championship game at Noon (and the 'if needed' game at 3:30 p.m.

The Huskies opened the game against Central Oklahoma by taking a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Najee Gaskins tripled to left center, which allowed Ethan Ibarra and Aaron Hammann to score. Lenny Walker then followed with a single up the middle, which brought home Gaskins to make the tally 3-0.
In the sixth inning, UCO posted one run to narrow the Huskies' lead to 3-1. SCSU appeared to be in control of the contest but a ninth inning rally handed Central Oklahoma the victory. With one out, UCO tagged SCSU for three consecutive runs to gain the win.
In the game, Gaskins took center stage on offense with three hits, two RBIs and one run scored. Gaskins now has five triples this season, which ranks seventh in the team's books for most triples in a season. Ibarra also had three hits and Hammann had a double in the game. Of note, SCSU outhit UCO by an 8-6 margin. Â
On the mound, Matt Butler was the pitcher of record with 1.1 innings pitched of relief work. Dominic Austing started the game for SCSU and went 6.0 innings, which included five strikeouts, four hits and one run allowed. An All-Region and All-NSIC pick this spring, Austing moved his school career strikeout total to 291.
