ST. CLOUD, MINN. – With a blizzard raging war on St. Cloud, Minnesota, the warmest place to be in the city might have been Halenbeck Hall Friday evening.
The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team was blistering hot Friday evening, so much so, the team's offense may have been able to melt the snow outside. The Huskies put up 100 points in their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) contest against Concordia-St. Paul, outpacing the equally red-hot Golden Bears for a key 100-90 victory.
St. Cloud State and Concordia-St. Paul scored a combined 92 points in the first half alone, with the Huskies holding a 51-41 lead over the Golden Bears at halftime. Ilya Tyrtyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49) was hotter than a snowman in summer in the opening 20 minutes of play, as he scored a team-leading 12 points in the first half on 4-7 shooting including a 3-4 mark from beyond the arc. Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) continued to have a hot hand as he scored 11 points while playing only 10 minutes, while Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) led the charge with six rebounds, including four offensive.
The Golden Bears threatened the Huskies team multiple times in the second half, whittling the lead to four at the 15 minute mark and then cutting it to 71-69 with 9:11 remaining in regulation. That was the closet Concordia-St. Paul would come to catching St. Cloud State, as late, clutch three's from Tyrtyshnik and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch allowed the Huskies to clinch the victory at 100-90.
Tyrtyshnik had a career day on the floor for St. Cloud State, as he led the team by scoring a career-high 26 points on 7-13 shooting, including a 6-10 mark from beyond the arc. Marshall was right on his heels, tallying 25 points with an impressive nine assists, while Roberts ended the game with a double-double, scoring 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington) rounded out the double-digit scoring party with 17 points of his own.
With the win, the Huskies overall record improves to 10-7 and their record is now 7-4 in NSIC play. St. Cloud State will look to break its Saturday losing streak when it hosts Minnesota State at 5:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
