ST. CLOUD, MINN. – Saturday is just not a good day for the St. Cloud State University men's basketball team. In a game where they were hoping to avenge an early season loss, the Huskies hosted Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) rival Minnesota State University in a key cross-divisional match up. Sadly, things did not go St. Cloud State's way, as the team fell to Minnesota State by a final score of 93-83.
The Huskies and Mavericks already squared off once this season, with St. Cloud State falling to its rival in a nonconference game by a final score of 73-61. This time around, with the game on their own court, the Huskies were looking to turn the tides despite trailing 43-42 at the half. Freshman guard Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) paced St. Cloud State in the opening half, scoring a team leading 13 points while tallying a team-leading four rebounds. However, a slow start in the second half, resulting in a 12 point lead for Minnesota State, as the Mavericks jumped ahead 67-55 with 12:11 remaining in the game.
The Huskies tried valiantly to erase the deficit, cutting Minnesota State's lead down to 74-73 with 5:42 remaining on the clock. Unfortunately, it was too much to overcome in the long run, as St. Cloud State was forced to foul and eventually fell by a final score of 95-83.
Roberts continued his career weekend by scoring a career-high 29 points against the Mavericks and added a team-leading nine rebounds. Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) finished the game with 24 points and six assists, while Ilya Tyrytyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49) added 10 points of his own.
With the loss, St. Cloud State's overall record now stands at 10-7 and the team is 7-5 in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action on Friday, January 24 when they face Northern State at 7:30 p.m. in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
