ST. CLOUD, MINN. – With snow falling softly on the ground, any thoughts of warmth and a good old western shootout were far from the minds of the St. Cloud State University basketball fans. Turns out, Halenbeck Hall is a pretty good place to host one during the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) basketball season.
Saturday afternoon, the St. Cloud State men's basketball teams squared off against Bemidji State University in one of the highest scoring games of the season. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they did not come out on top at the end of 40 minutes of play, as they fell to the Beavers by a final score of 91-82.
St. Cloud State trailed 44-39 at the half despite shooting .529 from the floor during the opening 20 minutes of play. Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) led the Huskies in scoring in the first half, as he scored 19 points on 9-12 shooting. However, St. Cloud State had no answer for Bemidji State's lengthy inside attack, as the Beavers used their length and height inside to shoot .571 in the opening half.
Still, the Huskies had overcome bigger halftime deficits than one point, but that was just not in the cards Saturday evening. Every time St. Cloud State would cut into Bemidji State's lead, the Beavers would go on a scoring run of their own. In fact, with five minutes remaining in regulation, Bemidji State held a 74-65 advantage and looked to put the Huskies away for good from the free throw line.
That was when St. Cloud State struck, as Marshall and Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington) hit back-to-back baskets to cut the Beavers lead to 74-70. At that point, the Huskies had several chances to get even closer to Bemidji State, but the lead was elusive, as St. Cloud State was forced to foul in the hopes of getting the ball back. While the Huskies did several times, the Huskies were never able to pull within six, as the Beavers took the game by a final score of 91-82.
Marshall was once again the team's leading scorer, as he closed his weekend by scoring a career-high 34 points on 14-24 shooting from the floor. He additionally added a team-leading eight assists, bringing his weekend total to 15.
Donaldson and Roberts continued to stay hot, as they both scored in double-digits for the Huskies. Donaldson's hot second half allowed him to close the game with 16 points, while Roberts finished the game with 14 points and four rebounds.
With the loss, St. Cloud State's overall record falls to 8-6 and the team is 5-3 in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action January 10 when they travel to face Minot State University at 7:30 p.m. in Minot, North Dakota.
