St. Cloud State Baseball welcomes 16 newcomers to the roster in the 2021 season. Our next edition of "Meet the Newcomers" features freshman catcher Nick Fridges of Cottage Grove, MN.
Friedges played high school baseball for Coach Dan Cosgrove at South St. Paul High School. He also played summer ball for Coach Cory Glieden with the Blizzard Varsity Blue team. He is the son of Bob and Jen Friedges of Cottage Grove, Minn.
Huskies Athletics: Why did you choose St. Cloud State University?
Nick Friedges: I chose St. Cloud State because when I first stepped on campus and talked to coach Dolan and met the guys I knew I wanted to be part of this.
HA: When did you decide you wanted to play collegiate baseball?
NF: I started really taking it serious sophomore year when I realized I had a chance to make it happen.Â
HA: How did you go about staying sharp baseball-wise during the COVID-19 related halting of the 2020 season?
NF: I was able to use my friend back home's batting cage and that helped a lot along with his weights in the garage.Â
HA: How have the upperclassmen helped you adjust to the collegiate level during your first semester at SCSU?
NF: The upperclassmen have been some of the best guys I've personally met. They have showed me the ropes and really became great friends.Â
HA: What are some of your favorite memories from your prep career at South St. Paul High School?
NF:Â My favorite memory hands down was going to the state tournament my sophomore year. It had been the first time South St. Paul had been to the tournament in like 30 years. Having the city rally behind us was a really amazing experience
HA:Â You had a great performance in the Red/Black World Series, posting a .748 OPS with a double and a pair of runs scored while playing stellar defense behind the dish and in the outfield. What was that first taste of collegiate baseball at Joe Faber Field like for you?
NF: Being able to perform when it mattered really felt good to do. Having the fall to get introduced to college baseball was great and gave me the chance to be ready when it was time to go.Â
HA: Who is an important person (or people) in your life that has helped you reach the collegiate level?
NF: First and foremost my parents, they have always been my biggest supporters and have paved the way for me to be where I am today.Â
HA: What are some athletic goals you hope to achieve while at St. Cloud State?
NF: Numbers and stats don't matter all I want to do is be able to play my role and make a difference where I can.Â
HA: What career field are you interested in?
NF: I don't care what I end up doing as long as I am able to build cars either as a living or a hobby.Â
