BURNSVILLE, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University baseball team got off to a rip-roaring start in 2020, as the team left the MIAA/GLVC crossover in Joplin, Missouri with a 3-1 record. Key to the Huskies success was sophomore starter Riley Ahern (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Academy of Holy Angels), who was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Ahern threw a near-perfect gem in his lone start of the weekend, helped St. Cloud State earn a 6-0 shutout victory over Missouri Western State University. In his season debut, Ahern threw five complete innings of shutout baseball, as he surrendered just three hits and two walks while striking out seven. Additionally, the sophomore held opposing batters to an impressive .176 batting average over the weekend and opened the year with a flawless 1-0 record.
After the weekend, Ahern leads the Huskies starting pitchers in ERA (0.00) and opposing batting average (.176), and he currently ranks second to his brother Shannon Ahern (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Academy of Holy Angels) in total strikeouts (8).
Ahern and the rest of the Huskeis baseball team will return to action on Tuesday, February 25 when they face Northern State University in a nonconference doubleheader at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 10 a.m.
