The six signees are the first to join the Huskies 2026 signing class
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball head coach Pat Dolan has announced the addition of six future student-athletes to St. Cloud State during the early November signing period. The group of Huskies will join the team for the 2027 seasons after finishing their prep and junior college careers this upcoming spring.
"We are extremely excited about the five high school student athletes we received commitments from," said Dolan. "They all fit the mold of great student athletes and culture guys. With the ever-changing landscape of college recruiting and the emergence of the transfer portal, we knew we were going to bring in a small high school class to save room for upperclassman transfers."
MAX FREDIN
Max Fredin is a 6-foot-2 pitcher from Rocori High School in Cold Spring, Minn., who excelled on the mound and at the plate for the Spartans in his 2025 junior campaign. Fredin pitched in six games, collecting a 4-0 record with a 2.28 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 27.2 innings pitched. Fredin started at quarterback for the Rocori football team this fall, helping lead the Spartans to an 8-2 record while throwing for more than 1,900 yards and 13 touchdowns.
"Max is another great dual sport athlete that's having a monster year at quarterback for Rocori. He's come to our camps the last few years so we've got to know him very well and he's just our type of guy. And a great body guy with so much room for growth and we think he's gonna be a high impact picture eventually when he's concentrating just on one sport and pitching."
JOSH SMITH
Josh Smith, a pitcher from Benilde-St. Margaret's High School, will join the Huskies after developing into a top pitching prospect from the Twin Cities metro area. Smith was limited to only 8.2 innings pitched in his 2025 junior campaign after an injury, but posts a 1-0 mark with one save, a 14:5 KK/BB ratio and a 2.40 ERA.
"Josh came highly recommended from both his high school coach and club team," said Dolan. "He's an under the radar type of guy with a live arm who tested great at a PBR showcase and is ranked number 49th in the state. He is a great culture guy that wanted to be a Husky and we think has a big future on the field."
"I chose St. Cloud State because of the experience I had on my visit," said Smith. "It felt like a place where I can improve athletically and academically while still enjoying my time outside of the field and in classroom while also being close to home."
ALEJANDRO "ALE" TAPIA
Alejandro Tapia, a pitcher from Stewartville High School, enters his senior campaign with three varsity letters and an all-conference award already under his belt. Tapia will return to the mound in 2026 after missing his entire junior season due to an injury. In his 2024 sophomore campaign, he went 8-0 in his first season as a starter with a 1.79 ERA, 60 strikeouts and a 1.442 WHIP in 43.0 innings pitched while earning all-conference, all-section and all-state honorable mention honors. As a relief pitcher as a freshman in 2023, Tapia collected four saves with a 0.95 ERA in 10 appearances.
"Alejandro had a very impressive sophomore campaign in high school and summer ball before going down with an injury," said Dolan. We've had a lot of success with guys with similar profiles and we're definitely not taking a chance on him as he's recovered fully and ready for a great senior year."
"I chose St. Cloud State because of the family feel and the focus on developing players on and off the field," said Tapia. "The coaches and current players are incredibly welcoming and I know they will push me to reach my full potential on the mound and in the classroom. I can't wait to see what the future holds for me as a Husky!"
COLBE TAPPE
A catcher from Staples-Motely High School, Colbe Tappe has earned all-conference, all-section and all-state awards in baseball, football and wrestling. On the baseball field Tappe hit .419 with three home runs for Staples-Motley and plays club baseball with Mash National. Tappe is a running back in football who has rushed for more than 1,000 yards and 19 touchdowns and was won more than 200 wins on the wrestling mat.
"Colbe was really the only catcher we were recruiting and offering a scholarship, and we just couldn't pass on him even though we have some pretty good young catchers," said Dolan. "He's a big time three-sport athlete and he has that coaching mentality on the field which you love behind the plate with his dad being his high school coach. He's very fundamentally sound player and he's played some big-time club ball with a lot of success and we're expecting big things with him offensively and defensively."
"I chose St. Cloud State because it felt like home to me," said Tappe. "I love the culture and the teammates that I will be spending my time with while I am there. I also really respect the coaching staff that will be guiding me on this journey."
VAN TELLIER
Hailing from Hopkins High School, Van Tellier will play infield and pitch for the Huskies. Tellier has won multiple "blue glove" awards as the best defensive player and an MVP award for his club team, Blizzard, and has been named captain of the Hopkins team for his upcoming senior season.
"Van got on our radar after attending one of our camps where he really stood out as a two-way player both at shortstop and he has a live arm off the mound," said Dolan. "His high school teammate and current Husky Karl Schiebe said he would be a perfect fit with our culture. We are very fortunate to have him commit."
"I chose St. Cloud State because I want to compete and play baseball at a high level, and I loved the baseball atmosphere that the Huskies brought," said Tellier "Along with the vibes, I loved the players and coaches. I think it will be a perfect fit for me and is exactly what I was looking for in a school."
NATHAN ZANDER
Nathan Zander will join the Huskies after two seasons at St. Cloud Technical and Community College where he pitched and played infield. On the mound as a freshman in 2025, Zander made six starts and 12 appearances, posting a 2-1 record with a 9.66 k/9 in 36.1 innings pitched. Nathan Zander played prep baseball for Maple Lake High School where he ranks in the top-10 in Minnesota State High School Baseball history in numerous hitting records, including consecutive hits (10 games), consecutive on-base streak (12), doubles in a game (three) and grand slams in a season (two).
