ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team may have finally found its groove. After earning a huge Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) sweep on the road last weekend, the Huskies were looking to keep their win streak alive with a win over Wayne State College Friday evening. Win was exactly was St. Cloud State did, as the team used a first half offensive explosion to take down Wayne State by a final score of 90-68.
The Huskies offense picked up right where it left off in Winona, as they scored nine quick points to hold a 9-2 lead over the visiting Wildcats. Eventually, though, Wayne State figured out how to score on St. Cloud State's stingy defensive, allowing the visitors to cut the lead to 23-17 with five minutes remaining in the opening half.
The Wildcats whittled the Huskies lead to five points late in the first half, but that was the closest they would ever come to catching the home team. In fact, St. Cloud State ended the first by outscoring Wayne State 16-2 in the final five minutes, allowing the team to hold a 44-23 lead at halftime. Illinois natives Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) and Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) played large roles in that run and the Huskies early success, as they scored a team leading 16 and 10 points respectively, while Roberts added a team leading five rebounds in the first half.
St. Cloud State got out to a bit of a slow start in the second, as Wayne State scored six unanswered points to just the lead to 54-36 at the second media time out. No matter what the Wildcats did, though, it wasn't enough to catch the Huskies, as they continued to maintain their double-digit lead and eventually win the game by a final score of 90-68.
Marshall and Roberts continued to be unstoppable in the second half, as they both finished the game with 20+ points and led both teams in scoring. Marshall recorded his fifth 30+ point game this season, finishing with 32 points on 9-14 shooting with an appetizer of four rebounds and five assists. Roberts tallied 20+ points for the third straight game, ending with 26 points and eight rebounds in 34 minutes of play.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 13-10 and the team is now 10-7 in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, February 8 when they host Augustana University at 5:30 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
