ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team seems to have hit its stride this past weekend. The Huskies are riding a two-game win streak, courtesy of their thrilling Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) wins over Upper Iowa and Winona State. This weekend, St. Cloud State returns home for its final NSIC South showdown of the regular season, as the team hosts Wayne State College and Augustana University.
The Huskies snapped several streaks with its weekend sweep, as they not only ended their three-game losing skid, but also broke the dreaded Saturday curse. St. Cloud State posted a 2-7 record on Saturday's leading up to a thrilling 90-83 OT road win over the Warriors. The Huskies look to keep the good times rolling this weekend, as they play host to the Wildcats and Vikings in their final NSIC South series of the 2019-20 regular season.
Friday's game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall, while Saturday's tip off will occur at roughly 5:30 p.m. Live stats, video and WJON's live radio broadcast will be available to fans to can't watch the game in person, and score updates will be made to the team's official Twitter account (@SCSUmensbball).
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's NSIC series:
84.5 – St. Cloud State's offense exploded in two wins last weekend, averaging 84.5 points per game while shooting .542 from the floor as a team, with a .417 mark from three-point range. The Huskies also racked up 79 total rebounds during the weekend, with 71 defensive rebounds and eight offensive, making it one of their most productive weekends of the 2019-20 season.
23.5 – Senior guard Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston) seems to have "refound" his groove last weekend, as he was once again the top offensive producer for St. Cloud State in its games against Upper Iowa and Winona State. Marshall averaging a team leading 23.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and .5 steals over the weekend while shooting .563 from the floor. In the Huskies 79-62 win over Upper Iowa, Marshall recorded 18 points on 7-16 shooting, but it was against Winona State where he really came to life. The senior recorded a double-double in St. Cloud State's thrilling overtime win, scoring 29 points on 11-16 shooting while tallying 11 rebounds and four assists.
3 – Marshall wasn't the only Husky scoring last weekend, as two others joined him in double-digit figures. Freshman Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) and junior Ilya Tyrtyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49) both averaged over 10.0 points a game last weekend, balancing St. Cloud State's offense both within and outside the three-point line. For the second consecutive week, Roberts averaged 20.0 points per game, while Tyrtyshnik averaged 15.0 after shooting .438 from beyond the arc. Thanks to their outstanding weekends, both Huskies are averaging double-digits points this season at 13.7 (Roberts) and 11.5 (Tyrtyshnik).
116 – St. Cloud State has played 116 combined games against Wayne State and Augustana, compiling a record of 71-45 in those meetings. In fact, the Huskies have posted winning records against both the Vikings (48-41) and the Wildcats (23-4), but lost two of their three meetings in 2018-19.
7-9/8-8 – Wayne State and Augustana are not having the seasons anyone expected, as both teams' records are hovering around .500 this season. After being the NSIC's Cinderella story in 2018-19, the Wildcats are 7-9 in conference play with an overall record of 10-15. It's the Vikings, though, that have underachieved in 2019-20. Expected to be one of the top-2 teams in the NSIC this season, Augustana is 8-8 in conference play this season, having split in each of its last two weekend series. The Vikings also have struggled against NSIC North opponents this year, posting a 2-4 record with loses to Bemidji State, MSU-Moorhead, Northern State and Minot State.
