Incredible Season for No. 25 St. Cloud State Men’s Basketball’s Ends in NCAA Central Region Semifinals

Winkel surpasses 1,000 career points, fourth-seeded Huskies drop Round of 32 matchup against No. 8 seed Minnesota Duluth, 61-55
TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 25 St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (26-7, 20-2 NSIC) dropped its NCAA Round of 32/Central Regional Semifinals tilt against Minnesota Duluth on Sunday evening at Lee Arena in Topeka to end its season. The fourth-seeded Huskies fell to the No. 8 seed UMD, 61-55.
Despite starting the game shooting 3-of-14 from the field and 1-of-9 from 3-point land, the Huskies held a 12-10 lead halfway through the first half after forcing four UMD turnovers. The Bulldogs tied the game at 12 just over a minute and a half later before the teams traded 3-pointers to knot the game at 15 with 7:31 left.
Minnesota Duluth (23-11, 13-9 NSIC) took its final lead of the first half with 6:07 left, before the Huskies closed the first 20 minutes on a 15-7 run that included two 3-pointers from junior guard Anish Ramlall (Rosemount, Minn.) and one from junior guard Wyatt Hawks (White Bear Lake, Minn.) to go into the break up 30-22.
SCSU used a balanced attack with four Huskies scoring five or more points. Hawks led the way with eight points on 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, sophomore guard Kynan Philippe (Melbourne, Australia) had seven, Ramlall had six and junior guard Nate Dahl (Buffalo, Minn.) had five. Sophomore guard Lee Marks III (Chicago, Ill.) led the way on the glass, grabbing five boards in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Huskies opened the second half on a 9-3 run on 4-of-5 shooting from the field to extend their lead to a game-high 14 points after a jumper from Marks III with 17:44 left. Over the next 5+ minutes, UMD responded with a 11-4 run of its to cut its deficit to five at the under-12 media timeout. During the Bulldogs run, sophomore guard Luke Winkel (Ankeny, Iowa) became the 47th player in program history with 1,000+ career points with a layup off a UMD turnover.
Out of the media timeout, Hawks and Winkel each scored a bucket to push the SCSU lead back up to nine with 11:11 left. The Bulldogs responded again, this time with a 15-7 run over the next eight minutes, taking their first lead in over 22 minutes of action with 3:38 left. The teams traded a lead three times before UMD retook it with 1:23 left after a pair of free throws. Minnesota Duluth scored to extend its lead to three with 33 seconds remaining. The Huskies missed 3-pointers on each of their next two possessions and were called for a technical after the officials believed a Husky called timeout when SCSU didn't have any left. The Bulldogs made both technical free throws and despite regaining possession, the Huskies missed another 3-pointer and UMD iced the game with a pair of free throws.

- Winkel led the Huskies in scoring for the 23rd time this season. He scored 15+ points for the 20th time this season and fifth consecutive game. He became the 47th player in program history to score 1,000+ points and ended the night No. 46 on the all-time scoring list with 1,010 points. Through his first two seasons, he is averaging 16.0 points per game which ranks No. 12 on the program's career PPG list.
- Hawks notched 14+ points for the seventh time and. In the game, he attempted a career high five 3-pointers. Hawks finished the season with the No. 6 program mark for rebounds in single season with 275 and No. 3 on the career blocks list with 128.
- Philippe scored in double digits for the ninth time this season and nabbed 7+ rebounds for the third time.
- Marks III scored five points and grabbed a team high nine rebounds. He led the Huskies in rebounding for the seventh time this season and recorded 9+ rebounds for the fifth time.
- Ramlall recorded six points, five rebounds and three steals. It was his sixth game this season with 3+ steals.
- Dahl notched five points and six rebounds.
